M16A1 is a good rifle ; but needs to be handled with a little care.
M16A2 is better - slightly tougher.
However, overall M16 is a great rifle - I think its ergonomics are excellent and it is light.

Don't quite like the SAR 21 except for builtin scope & plastic see thru mag - rifle is also just too heavy. Also, the Safe and Auto /Semi is darn right poor. With M16 it is just an easy flick with the thumb.

AK47 is quite inaccurate out to 200 m. M16 is accurate out to 350 m.
Also, I think M16, SAR 21 have longer 21 inch barrels while AKs have only about 18 inch ones. Don't know why SAR 21 has 21 inch barrel - newer rifles tend to have barrels around 2 inches shorter.

Yes. Longer barrels mean that the rifling can spin the bullet more, allowing for greater accuracy.

It also allows the expanding gases to act on the bullet over a longer period of time, increasing the range of the bullet.

Actually the AK 47s were last built in the late 50s or 60s - for the Russian ones anyway. They were replaced by AKMs and eventually AK 74s in 5.45 mm caliber. New versions in NATO calibres are AK 101 & AK 102.

AKs are accurate to 200 m , M16s to 400 m. M16 s are good but I prefer the G36 s. Our SAR 21s are too heavy and really need to be improved. Its ergonomics especially for Safe/Fire Single Shot/Auto sucks. Weight shud be reduced to 3.5 kg ( with scope ) range & the Standard SAR 21 for the normal infantry shud have Picatinny rails so that sights & other accessories can be attached. We also do not need a full length 20 inch barrel. Most new rifles make do with 16 to 18 inches - it will save weight, make overal length even shorter and does not have a major impact on accuracy ( for the normal combat ranges up to 300 to 400 m ) for the normal soldier especially when you have better optical sights. Lets hope that ST Eng comes up with a A1 version soon.

I do know that M-4 with short barrel have weak stoppage power.

I love the Ak too, thats when I am playing Counter-Strike. But when I fire an actual AK, oh my god, the recoil gave me bruises…I still prefer M16 although I think the Ak packs more wallop….but its not easy to aim accurately using Ak…

Well glock, I quite agree with you on the fact that the SAFE/SEMI/AUTO selector's ergonomics sucks big time but I disagree with the need for P-rails on the standard Infantry issue SAR21. Why? Because frankly, we are a conscript army, and most if not all the troopers will not spend money on optics, fore-grips, tactical lights etc. for their service weapon.

the overall of SAR 21 is good to new recruits and those not so fit.
I have seen teenages and even auntie of 40's shot SAR 21
live rounds without problems.

You need a 20' barrel to get the most magic out of the 5.56. Using that barrel and your typical ball ammo, the 5.56 is actually more lethal then the AK 7.62 bullet within 100 meters due to its fragmentation effects. Start messing around with the length and you'll see issues like not being able to stop your targets start to appear.

Reduce the barrel length and you will start to erode the very qualities of the 5.56 that give it certain neat advantages over the 7.62. In theory, you can carry more 5.56 ammo for 7.62 and in the short ranges typical of FIBUA your weapon is actually more effective at killing the enemy. Though 5.56 sucks at shooting through barriers... which would be typical in FIBUA.

I always wondered what's up with the SAR-21 fire selector, but I never had any issue with the weight. The justification for it, or so I heard was that if you mounted the same amount of accesories of the SAR (scope, LAD) on the M16 and you will get a system that is heavier. So the weight issue is pretty moot in the end. The SAR was supposed to be some kind of standard weapon to give a basic form of these capabilities to the conscript army I suppose.
