Nothing wrong for the RSN to having field a Destroyer.. if they wants to..

However given the seas in which we operate, Malacca straits and a bit of south china sea... will simply provide a bigger target for enemies, for god sake, I could see batam from the Singapore coast.

In fact, I find that the Formable Class frigate is abit too large for the kind of seas we operate in. Of course, the formable is Astor15 for air defense is great.

I believe that having a slightly smaller covettes (Frigates really) of 80-90m, with air defense VLS, is best.

Actually our Formidables are actually mini destroyers. They are multi-purpose platforms that can be used for AA , ASW and ASuW. The only difference is that they are smaller and required less crew due to both ship size and high automation.

The waters which our navy operates in, is considered as littoral waters. Considering the massive amount of civilian shipping and the numerous islands in our area, having a smaller vessel is actually an advantage. Large vessels are relatively harder to steer as compared to smaller ones.

Further more the nearest ocean to Singapore is the Indian ocean which is already the playground of the Indian,Chinese,Pakistani and US navies. The situation is complicated enough i guess they don't really want another player there. Very Happy

Personally,I'm in favour of developing the submarine fleet. Really hope they get some new ones instead of 2nd-hand Swedish. After all, some believe that the age of the aircraft carrier is giving way to the age of the submarine.

What added capabilities will a destroyer have over the Formidable-class frigates?

I'd rather RSN get an amphibious support ship like the JMSDF Ohsumi-class. Can also function as a helo-carrier. Smile

a destoyers only advantage over frigate is its ability to carry bigger weapons due to its size....

one possibilities is probably for TMD, if we can get our hands on those standard 3 SAM, which the americans are apparently placing great confidence in its ability to interecept ballistic missile.

recently... the defence minister has been quoted to have his sight set on providing singapore a Missile defence capability when he was talking about our air defence...

afew ships moving around with afew hundred standard 3 missile could prove useful... especially since we can forward deploy the vessel for long period and at long distance from singapore (giving us an advance intercept option) along the potential flight path of hostile missile path.

i for one... would hate to be too dependent on a single defence line from ground base SAMs... or ABMs... given our close proximity to not so friendly neighbours.

But we already have the Aster 15 on our frigates. The most possible upgrade candidate should be Aster 30 instead of Standard Missiles. Very Happy

The US are practically offering the mothballed spruance class destroyers for free, however no countries want it simply because the operational costs are way too high than running a couple of well armed frigates, not to mention the cost of refurbishing these relics

hi would suggest those have doubts on the classification of naval surface combatant.i.e. frigate, destroyer and cruiser. do some personal research, it wont take much of your time.it has got to do with the tonnage.

Tank1981 you should do your research on it as well. Mini destroyer its ridiculous if that the case even a corvette can be regarded a mini frigate or light frigate.Why are you so certain that herakle multi-radar used on formidable class frigate is designed and programmed for aster 30.

I believe that while land based TMD systems will be adequate, however, I foresee our doctrine of forward defense pushing for a navalised TMD platform.

As for the Aster 30 systems being compatible with the Formidable-class. Can someone verify this? I believe that though the Sylver launchers can be swopped, the issue lies in our radar.

I highly doubt so.. Aster 30 need a far bigger boaster which will be too big to fit into our Formiable class canister.

Come to think of it, even the Ticonderoga class cruiser of the USN, is closer to a destroyer in size rather than a cruiser.

RSN having a destroyer feasible? A highly automated destroyer perhaps. But whose gonna build us one? The Brits? Based on a Type 45? Or the French? Based on the Horizon class?

If the RSN wants to get a DDG, i hope they'd go for an AAW one. I don't give the AA capability of the Formidable class as much credit as some of us here. =)

The US Navy destroyer ( Arleigh Burke-class ) gives the USA a more potent offensive capability in the form of the tomahawk missiles it can carry in its two MK 41 Vertical Launching Systems (96 Cells). These cruise missiles have a range of 1600km and therefore the destroyer can perform deep strike missions against fixed targets at long range. Frigates ( OLIVER HAZARD PERRY-class ) lack this capability.

Destroyer feasible? IMO, its infeasible
Southeast Asia geopolitical atmosphere will not tolerate singapore's navy possession of DDG @ least for this decade.its detrimental to the balance of force of the entire S.E.A and raise inevitable criticisms. As for now, i dont see the possiblility of any significant naval procurement xcept for an upgrade in the anti-ship missile system.The current system is phrasing out, the next generation anti-ship missile emphasizes on land and sea engagement.

(Note: recent news reported that indonesia is turning to russia on the possiblility procurement of sovremenny Class. IMO, Singapore's will not follow suit.)

IMO, US and china shouldnt be included in this topic. As huge maritime nations,the existence of large suface combatant fleet in their naval arsenal is only obvious

When the topic mentioned feasible or not, I interpreted it as .. "Can we do it?" With the right builders and automation, I don't see why not. Whether or not the "geopolitical atmosphere" has no direct impact on evaluating whether we have the capability to man such a warship or not.

If the Indons do go ahead with their Sovremenny, I doubt SG would have any more restraints in acquiring Destroyer class vessels. Especially if they are AAW DDGs.

I think we dun really need to worry abt those Russian destroyers. If u look deeper into their capabilities rather than their names, u will discover usually Russian vessels of same class compared to NATO ships. They have lesser stealth features and they also seems to be a little underarmed. They only have 8 sunburn missiles and other features that is slightly similar or perhaps weaker than our Formidables.
I think RSN should concentrate on solving the issue of ferry the Leo2, get a larger transport ship. Another interesting thing maybe we can stretch the Formidables a bit longer to mkae way for some land attack cruise missiles, need not have too many, but say another 2x8 slots of VLS, it will add more dimensions to our offensive capabilties.
