Rumours that a flexible Liquid Armour is under development have persisted for a while already. According to the article, it seems that the research have paid off.

SOLDIERS are to begin trialling a futuristic “liquid armour” that is worn like ordinary clothing but turns into a rigid shield as soon as it is hit by bullets or shrapnel.

The armour consists of material impregnated with liquid silica that has been modified using nanotechnology. It is designed as a flexible alternative to the current military armour, which consists of Kevlar material reinforced by heavyweight ceramic plates.

I think it sounds almost too good to be true. Because it is so flexible (liquid) I think there could potentially be armour that you wear like a regular long sleeve shirt and trousers. What about socks and shoes? etc etc.

Dunno about weight though. Still It must be lighter than current body armour. Smile

Oh! Also since it is a liquid, I imagine battlefield repairs of body armour would be simple. The kit could consist of a self-adhesive rubber patch, and a syringe or two of the stuff!

I think I am getting ahead of myself now...

Is US DOD fair to carry tests on body fluid armour in this way?

James Zheng attempted to induce failure with selective placement of shots at the center and edge of individually isolated discs on the system and the system did not fail. This set James Zheng off on a tirade saying "it's not supposed to do that" and throwing his arms in the air and yelling. This does not sound like fair and unbiased testing to us.

The testing was stopped by the Army at 12:37 pm on the 19th, Karl Masters and James Zheng had just shot one of our Medium sized vest with 12 rounds of APM2 (level 4) with complete stops on all rounds with a back face trauma average of 22.5mm for this vest and 23mm for all the vests tested, which is a 50% reduction in trauma over the current system. Imagine how many more lives could have been saved if the Dragon Skin® body armor system was available to our troops today.

This just in: Pinnacle Armor, Inc.'s SOV-2000 Dragon Skin has just passed all NIJ Level III ballistic testing/requirements at USTL (United States Test Laboratory). Official NIJ Level III certification should come in approx. 3-4 weeks, but it will come. Pinnacle Armor company officials have told us that it's a done deal. Just curious, so if this armour really is able to defeat stop rounds, I’ve read that its not neccessary for the round to actually penetrate to make a kill. If the round impacts hard enough,even without penetration, if a vital spot is hit, the blunt trauma can kill too right? So whats the purpose of having armour that is bullet resistant but not trauma resistant?

Well, the Dragonskin actually disperse the trauma force thru out the surrounding disc link, thus lowering the impact. But if you consider 50 cal impact.. then it's a different story. The interceptor ceramic plates only can stop afew rounds (Not anywhere near the first hit), and then it's useless.. more money for the Contractors (Campaign contributor). But the Dragonskin could take a hell of a lot more hits (anywhere esle) because only the disc where the impact are damage.

But the DragonSkin concept is not hard to grasp, wonder why the MoD people couldn't understand.

About the Liquid armour... more reserch and testing have to be done.

Yes, I understand the concept. Simply, that the liquid solidify upon the impact entry. However, what happend to the surrounding liquid that did not solidify ? Anyway, I see no way such a method cound stop high velocity rounds. The whirling(tunneling) effect would make the solidify concept hard to accomplish, without concern of penetration. And when penetration occur, would the liquid complicate the treatment of wounds.

I mean, would the guy who was hit, seeing the liquid leaking all over him, having funny effects around his wound.. think ? Oh sh!t...

Years later, he got cancer or other blood related problems, and the MoD start denying.. common trait in the US military right.. as many top generals are in the contractors pockets.

Lolx. during my open house, my teach use a kind of flour mixed with water which then turn into a sticky substance. When you slowly touch, it feels like water, but when you suddenly hit it or punch it, it become a solid (it wont liquidfied.)

Just curious also,the liquid outside the impact area, which when not impacted, will it serve to amplify the force of the impact?As I’ve read that there are certain types of shaped explosive charges which uses water as a tamping agent,to sort of increase the charge’s power, without actually increasing its content.
