there are plenty of shipyard and harbours along the entire SLOC... srilanka isnt important.

The main sea lanes are further to the south of Sri Lanka, outside the range of the LTTE, which is basically a coastal naval force using speed boats. The tankers do not call at Sri Lanka. Most do a straight non-stop run from the gulf to south-east asia.
