You know in english papers they sometimes use latin phrases or other languages but when we put in a hokkien word in our compo we get marked wrong

There is this word called "discrimination" .

I believe it's called "language discrimination", due to the thinking of "language supremacy" (some assume one language is superior than the other, may it be due to recent years event or preset mindset, the word "assume" was used because "Assumption is the mother of all fuckers")

Dun lambast me. Some scholars (those who wrote dictionaries) thinks that Hokkien, and other dialect, is a language, not a dialect. TS, add the inverted commas before you use the dialect.

the chinese we speak today is jus one of the many dialects in china.....jus happen beijing chosen to be the central admin area, so the beijing dialect becomes the "universal" chinese

most languages today were/are still dialects....

In the first place, all dialects should be using the same chinese script (since Qin Shihuang).

So how do you know that chinese word is a hokkien word?

Ask your teacher why.

Perhaps you didnt properly write it as a non-English word.

If Im not wrong, non-English words should be written with italics, or with quotation.

If you didn't mark it properly as a non-English word, then I believe your teacher is correct to mark it as your mistake.

I actually think that a little addition of another language adds flavor to a composition.
Assuming you do it right of course; some people suck at English, and use a little dialect/whatever inside, and of course, OF COURSE, it would be a FAIL; like popikachu's essay.....

i still believe kang tang eaters ARE the minority.

a lot are FAKE kang tang eaters.
those who think its 'cool' to suck at their mother tongue.
those who think all things 'a-may-lee-can' is cool.
those who speak with the weirdo fake accents (esp when overseas in an 'ang mo' country Twisted Evil Laughing childish as it may be, sometimes when i hear one, i go up to them and say "hi, r u from singapore?...' )
etc.
worse thing is...a lot of these fake kang tang eaters cant speak decent english for nuts...

English is actually of a germanic origin. It absorbed alot of other languages and bastardise them into its vocabulary like " khaki (indian), gingham (indian), via (latin), romance (latin/old french) " etc.

Latin was the formal language of the scholars and the clergy in Medieval England . French was the a former court language. Latin was the mother of modern romance language like french, spanish , italian, portuguese, romanian, catalan.

English was never derived from Latin , it derived some of its vocabulary from latin and old french.

Similarly Hokkien is not derived from Mandarin. Mandarin as we know it today is a relatively new 'dialect' which is much influenced by northern 'invaders' such as mongols and Manchu's. The streamlining of the language was done to suit the Tanguistic characteristic of dropping end consonants in speech and to a degree.. the simplification of tones. It can be argued that 'Dialects' such as Hokkien, Cantonese (especially) or Hakka preserved more of the characteristics of ancient speech due to southern migration and the relative isolation from the influence of northern tribes.
