think i've come across a similar theory awhile ago. can't say i really buy it.

i particularly believe in wat i personally call "progressive conditioning". unless u are running in a race engine, the methodology to follow should fall within the "safe" side of conventional run in techniques. subjecting the car to various throttle loads, initially keeping rpms below 3k and gradually raising the bar as it proceeds to hit the next oil change. while not fool proof, this does enable the piston rings and bearings to get accustomed to various tolerances before being subjected to regular "abuse".

its not like u can drive like a wuss at one point b4 the prodigal 1k servicing and ram ur engine sky high the next and expect the rings and bearings to sit in instantaneously ya know Smile

Just like to see what you might think if for the new car you are getting, the SE said you only need to first service it at the 10,000km instead of the usual 1000km, 5000km, 10,000km. Reason he gave is they use "good quality" engine oil as recommended by their Japan counterpart.

By the way, it is the Daihatsu Siron.

For normal 1.6 cars

4th gear @ 3k rpm is normally around 80km/h

5th gear @ 3k rpm is around 100km/h

For 2.0 and above

4th gear @ 3k is around 90 and above

5th gear @ 3k is around 110 and above

But this really depends on the horsepower and throttle level.

As for run-in during the first 1K before servicing.. try to maintain around 2.5k to 3 k rpm for all the gears not juzz only to smooth run the engine, its oso to save your life. Coz during the first servicing, they will oso help you to tighten some of the screws so its better to go slow first if u dun really wanna see your trye running faster than your car. A new engine is juzz like you juzz started to light your ciggie, need to inhale a bit first before u continure for a deep in hale to smoke.

After your first servicing, den its time to slowly build up the rpm, go to 3.5 den 4 den 4.5 and so on. It is oso to let your engine get accustom to the power lvl .Dun go for a full blow immediately after your first servicing if u wanna have a longer engine life. There are some idiots i kno who juzz ramp all the way and less den 1 yr problems comes out for eg. How come the FC like increase. Engine like dying for more power etc etc...

So far i have tried on my lancer and its all ok.. Highest reach is 180km/h on 5th gear @ 5.5k rpm and its working fine. Take your time to build up the cars stamina.. dun b too hasty about it. I waited till 10K service den go for the 180. after the first servicing, i only go to 120km/h.

i'd say, these SEs can recommend and claim a thousand and one things, but at the end of the day, the car is ur's, and we all know dat some SEs are plain ill informed.

not dat i doubt their credibility. sure, japanese engines nowadays can lay claim dat they dun need 2 be run in. its juz a matter of how much the owner cares to try. ultimately, ask urself who is gonna be respnsible if ur piston rings start leaking or ur bearings getting burnt as a result of following their advice?

As I thought! I also told my friend it sounded fishy. Feels like the dealer is trying to save on the free servicing labour for that 2 servicing. I mean I heard of pre-run-in cars, but the funny thing is the SE said to run-in the car for 1000km, then drive normally after that. So he is telling people that car needs running-in, but only need to change oil at 10,000km milage. Funny! Neutral

it doesn't matter whether you drive at what speed at what rpm, cause mostly when your car arrive at the shop for you to collect, chances are, the car may have reach more than 5 rpm and the speed may have reach up to 120 km/h.

how do i know?
cause i got some friends who drive those cars from the ship all the way to the warehouse and do you think they give a damn about the car? they just press the accerator all the way siak.......

What cars are your friends driving? Anyway, at least for Vios and Kelisa, I have seen them being transported to the collection points by big trucks. When I collect my car, its milage is about 17km. It is that short to travel from the dock to Ubi?

Even if the car have already reach those high-end condition once, it doesn't mean we can do it everyday. Thus the advice for light driving for the first few hundred kms.

when e bloody cars are being transported from e port onto the ship they are oredi being ram and driven at high speed. they haf a schedule to meet and those driver dont gif a hoot about anythng. they jus wan as many car aspossible so they earn more. so imagine. ur car is oredi being ram when its about 1km – 5km. dotnt matter if u do some hard driving on ur new car occasionally. it wont hurts.

agree.....these drivers are working all the way till the cars are clear from the ship. usually it takes between 15 to 20 hrs to clear. any delay, the ship will be charge another day for parking

Forget about running in the car.

Often, I would see Nissian new cars (those without number plate and hanging of the blue number plate) driving through woodlands road at very high speed. I am travel at about 80km/h and they speed pass me!

Why can't they take care of the new car? Crying or Very sad

mostly wat spd at wat rpm all depends on the gear ratios, a high gear ratio mean better acceleration which means a high rpm but low top spd, and vice versa(or issit the other way round Confused ) anyway i believe in the slow mtd of running in ur engine.. the ramming mtd sounds logical, but wat if ur engine screws up suddenly and u dunno wat to do wif ur 'new' car? sHit always happens Mr. Green
