People's Republic of China and Republic of China are two different things. Taiwan (RoC) is recognised as a single country.

They were not expelled... the UN merely switched it's membership to PRC's.. this is cos of the rule of recognising each splinter state to it's original government.
Since most of the member countries of the UN recognise Taiwan as a sole country, it is only sensible that the UN still recognises Taiwan. Written, but not assumed.

Exactly. United Nations recognized PRC when they "switch" membership as you called it... as though ROC never existed.

ROC tried to gain membership into UN, but they never made it past the reviewing committee. Because, UN regards ROC as part of PRC.

The UN as a whole made the rule of not acknowledging splinter states but instead their superiors after WWII (when UN was formed) mainly for avoiding the trouble. Another member country means another opinion in international issues. However for each individual country in the UN, another country on the globe means more avenue for economic gains. That's why most countries still have relations with taiwan-whether official or unofficial even though they claim not to recognise Taiwan as a lone country.

ahh WTF. My point from the start is that, the data by the IMF is more reliable than that of the CIA. And even if you argue that the CIA released it’s data a year later than that in the wiki page, a $10,000 jump in just a year is ridiculous.

Ok. If it makes you happy. I agree that many countries in the world has links with Taiwan mainly due to economic gains. They have their own currency, military and police might and economic stronghold.

But until the One China Policy is unadopted by many large leading economic countries in the world, politically, it will not be seen as a sovereign or independent country.

Under the eight rules of acceptance to be an independent country, Taiwan just do not comply with it.
