Vulnerability to mines

Its quite a common practice to use hovercraft as a landing craft in amphibious landings. USA, Russia and UK have such vessels in active service. My question is since these craft are floating on a layer of air so will they still trigger off floating sea mines, anti-personnel and anti-tank mines on the beach? If so will the possibility of triggering an explosion be lower due to lower ground pressure? Very Happy

sea mines yes. Since some of them are triggered disturbances in the magnetic fields. As for how much damage it can do to a hover craft, would probably depends on how deep the mine is moored i guess.

As for land mines... err im not sure if ppl actually mine beaches... sometimes water and salt not too healthy for the mines and the engineer laying it.

Thats a good question. Its common knowledge that we have minesweepers but its not known for sure that we have mine-laying capabilities. But then again there are never dedicated mine-laying vessels in navies throughout the world. So i suppose we do have mine-laying capability but incoporated into multi-role combat naval platforms such as the corvettes and the frigates. Very Happy

Well,not exactly true. Mine-laying capability can be used to block off one end of a straits and force commercial vessels to turn the other way. Its not es effective as a naval blockade which allows for selective targeting of vessels, however it is cheaper as once the mine is laid, that's it.End of story..no need for maintenace whatsoever.

but for mines, if u lay it there, it means that u yourself can't use the area as well. so it is not the end of the story.

Actually, sectors of naval lanes will be marked out and this information will be disseminated throughout the whole navy for common avoidances of the sectors where the mines are laid…

I know of a few engineers and pioneers who would agree with you that the water and salt of seawater is not healthy for them too! Laughing

Salt water is damn and really sianz, but we don't lay minefield on the beach , just beach fortification.

Minefield on the beach is of now use, the waves will wash and expose the mines.
