Any of you saw the ST Engineering 1-page ad on 1 Jul congratulating the SAF on SAF Day?

Did you notice the M-16 rifles carried by the SF (?) in the ad? They looked like M-16A2s! Anyone noticed that ad?

I brought it up a few months back with a smiliar photo that was seen in pioneer mag. Everyone told me not to believe what I see... Duh!

Aiyah, we probably have a few stashed away somewhere.

Or perhaps this are the same guys who went to train in the States and borrowed rifles from the Marines when they were at 29 Palms.

I noticed that too. I guess its just for a photoshoot so it is most probably not being used or widely used in SAF itself. One reason why the M16A2 is used for this picture maybe becuse it is certainly of a newer design as compared to the M16S1, therefore it will generate a more modern image of SAF. Very Happy

I thought our N neighbours PR machine is adept at that and I tend to take their announcements with a pinch of salt, but MINDEF or even ST? SHAME ON YOU.

Hey, how about in order to showcase an EVEN MORE POTENT SAF, why not in future, attach a pic of a Topol-M in the launch position behind a crouching commando?

saw a picture of our troops wearing the interceptor body armour(maybe PASGT) vest complete wif neck and groin protection and protecting goggles…seems that we are importing a fair amount of US equipment.

Actually, I'm not so sure that is the case. If they really wanted to portray a modern image SAF, they would have opted for a shot with the SAR21 )with the LADs all lit up) which is they pride and joy and supposedly more modern no?

The more I think about it, the borrowed weopons for overseas exercise seems likely.

Maybe the M16A2s are fresh stock kept for times of real conflict? I wouldn't be surprised.

After all, IMT training rifles are M16A2, with their mechanisms stripped.

My sentiments exactly! Wouldn't a portrayal with SAR-21s with all the LADs all lit up a pretty good representation of a modern SAF infantryman?

I was more surprised given that it was STE (being the manufacturer of the SAR-21) wouldn't be proud of having their own design weaponry being graced on a 1-page ad instead?

surprise me if we go with the M16A2. remeber that the A2 have a 1:7 barrel twist and will not fire the 55 grain M193 ammo very well! it shoots perfect on the M855 or SS109!

SO , unless Singapore adopt the new ammo!

But I doubt it. With the SAF intent on switching to the SAR21, it doesn't really make sense to buy another model of M16. Especially as they would have to switch ammo as well?

Perhaps its for the SOF people. They probably have a separate budget to buy stuff they want and might have decided the prefer the M16A2 overthe SAR21.

But I'll still bet on my "borrowed" weopons for overseas training theory.

If we bought them, it would be logical because the M16A2 was in service since the 1980s.

That would have been before the development of the SAR21. Then again, more rifles in the inventory never hurt anyone.

But your theory could be valid too.Perhaps that picture was taken abroad at 29 Palms.

Back in the late 80's I saw a picture in TIME magazine about the conflict there and it showed a Croatian Guardsman slingling an Ultimax with drum magazine behind his back. I still have that magazine cut out somewhere at home.

I asked one officer that worked for CIS about it during reservist. He smiled and looked away - his rank giving him the privilege of not having to answer a over-inquisitive corporal (me).
