Steyr rifles to be phased out

tankee1981 SG

Its kind of a weird move by the MAF as most countries are moving away from the M16 and its derivatives there they are now buying them now. I am not saying that the weapons are lousy but it doesn't make sense to dump a relatively new weapon (Steyr AUG used for only 15 years) to be replaced by a weapon of an older model. Further more other users of the Steyr AUG such as Australia are still using them without any problems. So what exactly is the root of the problem? Very Happy

kopi money perhaps ? ... Laughing

I actually recall reading some news article a few years back that they were negotiating tech and tooling transfer from steyr to m'sia so that they can start manufacturing AUGs locally ... but the news died there and nothing was heard about it since ....

Never mind his posture; look at where his freakin' trigger finger is located.

martin_lim85 SG

Laughing its not even loaded

Meia Gisborn SG

What if it were? Would you feel comfortable being around an individual who exercises poor trigger discipline while wielding a loaded firearm?

martin_lim85 SG

of cos not when loaded lah. but there no mag so how u feel unsafe when unloaded? misfired Laughing

Meia Gisborn SG

There's no mag in the rifle, but can you be sure there's also no cartridge in the chamber?

Bad habits developed outside of the range can very easily bite you in the rear at the most inopportune times, like when you're handling a loaded firearm at the range. Again, there's no guarantee that a person who casually fingers a trigger on an unloaded firearm will not do likewise with a loaded one. I've seen my share of negligent discharges at the range caused by harebrained shooters accidentally fingering the trigger on a loaded firearm, and the results are usually not pretty, especially if the firearm wasn't pointed downrange when it discharged.

For your edification, these are the Four Rules of Firearm Safety that are held sacrosanct by responsible firearm owners here:

Rule 1 - Treat all firearms as always loaded.

There are no exceptions to this rule. Assume that all firearms are loaded until you have verified otherwise.

Rule 2 - Never allow a firearm to point at anything you are not willing to destroy.

Experience has shown that this is the easiest rule to violate. More than half of the fatal firearms accidents are a result of neglecting safety rules 1 and 2.

Rule 3 - Keep your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard until your sights are on target.

This rule is conspicuously absent in many firearms training programs and is particularly important to staying safe while carrying a firearm under stress, while moving, etc.

Rule 4 - Be sure of your target and what lies beyond.

say so many also wasted, cos its for show nia for sure theres no cartridge in the chamber one. Laughing

Meia Gisborn SG

Remind me to keep well clear of you when you're handling a firearm. Mr. Green

martin_lim85 SG

Mr. Green haha dun worry in open house etc no SOP one for me Laughing but i ops/mission always on SOP for serious matter Wink

Rules are good. Keeps people from dying.

I think most of our NS guys are pretty good when it comes to safe handling of firearms. The smart ones will protect their weekends at all cost, the dumb ones will learn to handle firearms safely by protecting us from external threats on weekends.

Thats a good one! This way they will learn safe weapon handling one way or the other.

On a side note, there is a case of a live armbrust LAW being displayed in one of the Asian Aerospace exhibitions in the past, not sure if anyone can remember. Luckily, there were no accidents. So bottom line is always confirm, never assume. Very Happy

That was when AA was at PLAB.
Somebody died from the backblast. The counterbalance plastic bits hit a bystander on the back, he died on the spot. The warhead, flew an upward ballistic curve and exploded on the runway.

Till date nobody knows who pulled the trigger.

LazerLordz SG

better to be safe than sorry. Every single weapon in my hands, will be checked thoroughly before entering the workshop.

There is no room for error.

LazerLordz SG

That was a very unfortunate incident. In the world of weapon handling, nothing is left to chance. Check and double check, and for goodness sake ,take those fingers out of the trigger guard.

Hmmm... Maybe there was a cover-up. Shocked

Thats weird. The armbrust LAW is designed to penetrate armour so the warhead is not explosive. Further more it is high velocity so it will fly straight without any curve, if it is aim up then the projectile should land in an downward curve instead of an upward one.

Anyway it is fortunate that the projectile did not hit anyone in the exhibition hall or many more will be killed as it can penetrate many bodies before hitting something tough enough to stop it. Very Happy

I'm surprised that someone in SAF was actually dumb enough to display a live LAW...

I guess common sense isn't common until something uncommonly bad enough happens to make it common.
