As some of you know, I live in Shanghai.

I moved to a new apartment and every now and then, I fear jet fighters cruise by, among the blare of train horns and rumble of river barge engines.

I finally was able to take a passable pic with my non-zoom camera.

Can anyone identify?

It's a single tail fin so it's not SU-27 or SU-30.

Yep, agree with coolant that the planes are JH-7 fighter-bombers.

As I'm not familiar with PLAAF units, sorry. I can't verify on the units! Wink

Spot on coolant. JH-7A - a Rolls Royce engined fighter bomber developed by China. Engine is supposed to be under-powered.

They usually fly pretty slow probably not to make too much noise over the city.

Sino Defence listed a PLANAF unit operating JF7/A in Shanghai. I see them quite often so they are probably Shanghai-based as opposed to Hangzhou-based.

It's quite a beautiful, though slightly dated-looking aircraft. Looks like a Jaguar and reminds me of our F-5E though much bigger and twin engined.

thats what i thought too. An enlarged f-5E. Btw Iran has a fighter that looks like an f-5 and another that looks like an F-5 with twin rudder. Any ideas?

Erm... let's put aside the questions of the size of my tools are when I whip them out...

I think the paint scheme on the top few pics I posted are beautiful aren't they? The lettering and emblem in simple black lines. Looks very American.

Remember the PLA plane that rammed the US spy plane not too long ago? Does anyone remember what model aircraft was it?

That would be the J-8, which was also a modified/re-engineerd Mig-21.

No, J8 fighter is more a Chinese made Mig23 rather than Mig21

The J-8 is meant to counter the MiG-23. But it is definitely shaped like a MiG-21, with the nose air intake shifted to the sides like most modern aircrafts.

Hmmm there appears to be some discrepancies from website to website regarding the J8.
