generally if u wanna create the volume effect on your
hair:
scoop up a considerable amount of wax/mud (slightly less than the
area of your thumbnail)
rub your hands together to spread the wax/mud evenly
apply the wax/mud onto your hair by messing up your hair (not too
much, just lightly)
proceed to style your hair to your desired style

twist and pull up areas of your hair which you wish to spike
