PETALING JAYA: It took several years and billions of ringgit but the Malaysian defence industry can finally be proud.

Local heavyweights DRB-Hicom Defence Technology Sdn Bhd (Deftech) will launch the first Malaysian-made light armoured vehicle today, to coincide with the opening of the Defence Services Asia exhibition 2006.

The vehicle is the pride of Deftech, which thus far has only assembled and manufactured military vehicles under licence from foreign companies.

The four-wheeled Deftech AV4 is an all-wheel-drive light armoured vehicle capable of carrying up to eight people or a payload of two tonnes.

The vehicle is capable of withstanding small arms fire, making it suitable for peacekeeping missions. Its underside is protected, ensuring the safety of those travelling in it.

It’s ugly just the way I like it but the photo doesn’t do justice. Its front grille appeared to be missing. Hope to get a closer look later on.

Wow, an interesting production. Has it gone itnto full swing production? How many vehicles the MAF plans to accquire? ANi other possible variants?

I once saw on this Philippines military forum, there was this thread which they mention that the Philippines came up with this 4x4 armoure vehicles. It is claimed to be an improved reverse engineer of the SIMBAS known as "KALAKIAN". I saw the picture, they seem to come out with a turret for their own version of the 40/50 cupuola. I wonder how advance is this vehicle made by our neighbours.........Seriously, aren't they worried abt the ground pressure issue? Why not a tracked one?

how can u say that?? do u know the specifications of the vehicle?? do u know how much r n d were involve in the vehicle?? like any military.... do u think they wanna waste money on some scrap vehicle. obviously they got a particular reason in doing it.

anyway...its a good effort by our malaysian counterparts to make the vehicle. money is paramount for them. cos they got much more soldiers to pay and much more camps and buildings and maintenance to upkeep. so to actually start researching and develope new vehicles....it shows that one day...malaysia capabilties in thier armed forces would be far more superior.

Tripwire have a point there. Does this vehicle really require billions of RM to develop? I mean its not new technology, one can easily buy this off the shelf, lets say from the South Africans. Certainly save quite a bit this way. Very Happy

Actually this design is based on, if not identical, to the British GKN Sankey Saxon armoured truck transporter introduced in the 80s. Nothing surprising

Hey you're right! looks very much like the GKN Sankey Saxon. Which Malaysia does use.
But maybe it's upgrade and stuff hence locally designed and built without the need for a lisence!

How much did the USA spend on converting LAVIIIs into Strykers? Hint: It wasn't cheap, and the LAVIII was ALREADY a proven vehicle.
No point taking a proven, foreign design and making a local version when you can buy off the shelf? Some of you need to grow up... Laughing

So far we only know stuff based off ONE PICTURE. Most of you have no clue about the electronics within the vehicle, the possible variants and perhaps most importantly, its intended operational parameters. 'Suitable for PSOs' does NOT mean its limited to such a role ONLY.

Some might wonder why we invest so much in the R&D into the Terrex, when there are already proven platforms out there that are as good if not better. Sound familiar, people?
