The sad thing is, i will always come across Omar, Eisenhower, Marshall or MacArthur in media or literatures or even movies, but Arnold seems little mentioned as compared to those four.

Cos General Arnold is only technically in the army. He belong to the army air corp, which later became a separate service ie Air Force.

I’d say it comes down to either Dwight Eisenhower or Hap Arnold, Eisenhower because of the speed with which he twigged on to Hitler’s plan at the Bulge and Arnold because of his grasp of air warfare, reflected in his predictions decades down the track. Bradley conducted himself pretty much as a 2 I/C rather than a leader, while Marshall struck me more as an administrator and MacArthur’s success was pretty much a result of audacity rather than actual brilliance (much like Patton).

No insult to the above 5-star Generals, they are definitely men of their time. But I personally admired another 5-star General (Admiral to be exact) - Chester W Nimitz.

I may sound cruel here, but it is perhaps thanks to the Pearl Harbor attack that thrusted Adm Nimitz to become the perfect man to lead the USN (esp in carrier tactics) against the carrier-minded Jap commander Yamamoto.

Just for info for those who who wonder who is the other 5-star General - Henry Arnold (he is more well-known as 'Hap' Arnold). Even though he may not be involved in the actual decisions in the field, but it is his great appreciation of the effects and understanding of strategic bombing (over tactical bombing) that dictated the evolution of US Bombers during WWII.

George C Marshall shines in his own area as an administrator and a planner. I think it is him who actually recommend Eisenhower as the supreme commander in Europe. On hindsight, Eisenhower would have to thank Marshall for giving him the opportunity stepping over many other more senior general

For Macarthur, I guess he is the most colourful figure in US army. Yes, he may be brash and probably not as good in tactical operation and planning compared to others.... but who can forget the American Caesar with his "I shall return" and the "Old soldier never die" speech....

Anyway, I myself would prefer Fleet Adm Nimitz as well. No disrespect to the other 5 stars but I always root for the Navy and Marines.

I think General Dwight D. Eisenhower, he was the supreme commander for invasion of europe during 1944.
