Is DAF getting more Light Strike Vehicles?

Anyone have any idea?

It seems like teh vehicles have proven their worth and have demonstrated their capability many times over. So why isn't the SAF ordering more of them.

Seems like they are better than the Merc jeeps that we use for the scouts.

Anyway, my two cents worth on the Merc 240 jeeps is that the Wranglers produced by sister company Chrysler-Jeep are possibly tougher.

Yep, definitely love the LSV like the Flyer. Spider is a good concept, but feel that it is more suited for the C3 aspect of missions or serving as a communications platform.

But why doesn't SAF have vehicles like the Hummer, offers protection for the crew as well as provide good cross country ability.

Am I the only one who thinks the LSV is just a white elephant showpiece?

Sure they look sexy and dangerous but other than recce, they can do nothing more than harrassing or nuisance "shoot & scoot" attacks. They are not even capable loading more stores for longer "LRRP" missions.

It provides no protection even from someone armed only with a pistol as it is almost completely open concept.

And what good is a LSV's cross-country ability in Singapore? Bash thru the jungle? So in our tropical zone they will be road-bound a lot of the time. And being road-bound, you better have armour. So like some others say, Hummer might be better.

So their real strategic value is not very clear.

I have a feeling SAF is fielding them to look more "garang" and also help in marketing these LSV Spiders to overseas clients.

China's PLA also has these "for show" units mounted in missile-armed open-concept jeeps. All these troops wear dark glasses and have helmet-mouted scopes and radios etc. Sure they look the business and are probably very capable fighting men. But again, nothing more than showpieces to give the impression that PLA is advanced.

Well, for one the Hummers lack the speed and can't travel up 60 degree gradients. Feel that they would compliment each other, that way, it will work seamlessly.

Look at the British SAS, they have their Pink Panthers which are supported by Merc. Tonners, so we can use the Hummers to hold our stores and spareparts for the LSVs as well

The reason is simple. The company that SAF bought the LSV from..has defunct.

Maintenence have to be done by ST instead

err, our land rovers don't offer any protection against small arms at all... Whereas, the hummers do offer some protection.

Hummer kinda too big for sg roads also. Not to mention gas sucker.

Our rovers don't have the slightest bit of armour. Some are used as Scout Vehicles with the GPMG on it, but other then that. Its worse the the LSV. at least LSV I have got a full range of weapons to return fire with.

The Hummers are very very expensive... I don't think we could 'afford' it.

The LSV is suppose to be part of the vertical envelopement maybe as part of the 3D battle....

So technically can heli portable behind enemy lines and strike where the enemy is the weakest.. at the rear.

Erhhh... SAF wartime strategy... well, lets just say it's not focused on Singapore per se, so LSV might not be meant for urban fighting.. Besides as the Iraq war proved, you basically need a tank to have a chance in a vehicle. Heck even a well aimed M203 round could take out a Rover or Hummer.

Not that our Rovers are armoured in the 1st place anyway. And at least the LSVs will be more more nimble than the Rover and mount more weopons.

Erhhh SpecOps87, we have Rovers used as scout jeeps? I think they are all using the Merc now.

They are using Merc 240s as jeeps indeed. The GPMG can be mounted on the U-shaped bar at the rear. Think it also comes with an auto gearbox.

There is also another kind of jeep for the MILAN gunners as well as covered command jeeps. All are built on the Merc 240 chassis.

That would be true for the landrover, jeep, motorcycle, etc. Any vehicle that is not armoured can be shot at by normal ammo.

but at least the LSVs are a lot more nimble than the jeep and rover.
