Singapore buys 2 Vastergotland Subs

1.Swedish navy have converted the younger two of the four boats in the Västergötland (Vgd) Class originally launched in 1987-1990 to Södermanland Class.
2.Equipped for operation in warmer waters
3 the Swedish Navy will get two practically new submarines capable of operating for the next twenty years without further modernisation.
4.Possible Spec of 2 Spore converted and upgraded subs .

Well, we have a long history of buying old stuff and upgrading the crap out of them. We did it to the Skyhawk, Tiger II, Sjoormen, M113, AMX-13... the list goes on.

I expect the same to happen to our Vastergotlands. I don't mind if the subs are second-hand so long as they can serve our purposes well.

They might just shove them under the Challenger class..makes no sense to makea new class for 2 subs.Unless, they plan to buy more Sodermanland subs..

Possible spec of incoming subs in 2010:

Only Sodermanland--1989.and Ostergotland--1990 are in active service.

The Ostergotland submarine equipped with Stirling AIP-air independent propulsion system was delivered to the Swedish Navy in October 2004.

The 212A Class submarine stands out due to its significantly longer diving periods than with all other conventional submarines. The longer diving periods are based on a new kind of propulsion system that is not dependent on outer air. In a chemical process, fuel cells convert oxygen and hydrogen into electrical energy. The power produced in this manner provides the propeller engine and all electrical systems on board with energy during the submerged operation.

Performance of the AIP system has been increased with two Siemens PEM fuel cells which produce 120kW per module and will give the submarine an underwater endurance of two weeks.

Malaysia incoming SCORPENE dunt equipped with AIP,according to Jane's Fighting Ship 2005-06,though later can be fixed.They will be launched in 2006-07.

However the need to come repeatedly to periscope depth to recharge the batteries using the diesel engine.Conventional modem submarines the indiscretion ratio ranges typically from 7 to 10% on patrol at 4 knots, and 20 to 30% in transit at about 8 knots.

With the MESMA system the AM-2000 submarine can stay down in underwater patrol three times longer than the CM-2000.

The convertion from conventional sub to AIP sub take 1-2 years at least for the hardware potion of the project. The entire engineering project is technically challenging as any misalignment on the welding joints will affect the acoustic signature of the sub.

Due to a modernization program applied to the remaining boats the class has been re-named Sodermanland. The Sodermanland class submarines have a stretched hull compared to Vastergotland class among other improvements.

The Stirling section adds 12 meters to the submarine length and is installed aft of the boat's tower.

This Chinese version of AFP news dd 04.11.2005 said the incoming subs equipped with a built in escape caspule so crews need not take conventional escape way by tornedo tubes.

The Vastergotland sub and Osterland Sub is not AIP equipped. Its confirmed by Kockums.

Sodermanland is in Swedish service.

However there is nothing in the reports that says we wont be adding AIP with them. It just named the 2 hulls we will be buying and gave a time frame that we will be taking to upgrade them.
