I don't remember the class of submarine involved, could have
been an alfa or kilo. Alfas would have been signifcantly noisier.
Even so, back then, we didn have proper capabilities to track
them.
Still, this is an unconfirmed "rumor" lar, since most submarine
related incidents are kept confidential for a long long time.
The straits of malacca is highly contested, it would be no surprise
that the former soviet union tried to exert some "presence" in the
region.
