Dots don't really matter so much, until you do programming.

Dash means minus...

Slash means divide.

Registry don't use ASCII for your info...

Go Bleeping Computer and find their registry tutorial. Everything is stated there about what type of "numbers" are used for registry values and how do you go about understanding them.

For Windows, it's quite OK, though there are exceptions. Linux handles it similarly.
