Aztik Armor for SAF vehicles!

Armor Systems gets $1M Singapore contract

Armor Systems International has begun work to up-armor military vehicles for the government of Singapore.

Under the approximate $1 million contract awarded by Wong Fong Engineering, Vancouver-based Armor Systems International will apply its Aztik armor to five-ton troop transport trucks, increasing their level of protection against ballistic weapons.

The contract gives Singapore options to purchase additional add-on armor kits for troop carriers and other military vehicles, which, if exercised in 2006, could increase the overall value of the contract by another $2 million.

Aztik armor panels offer protection against high-caliber rifle fire, fragmentation from mines and improvised explosive devices.

Come to think of it... $1m is kinda cheap isn't it?

This is great news! As soldiers tend to travel more in B vehicles such as rovers and tonners, it is very crucial to properly protect this vehicles. Since our 5-tonners are relatively new and powerful thus there is room for heavier armour protection. Just a side note, there have been accidents with tonners before such as the one in ROC with reservists, i wonder if this additional armour will offer better protection to its occupants? Very Happy

Maybe. I have seen one accident in Taiwan, and most of the injuries appeared to have been suffered when people were thrown around at the back. Of course the V-Com was stuck in front. I do not know the extent of his injuries but he did not seem terribly hurt. Assuming that the upgrade will do nothing to strengthen the poles holding up the canvas sheet, then the armor upgrade will have done nothing to protect the occupants behind.

In anycase, the taiwan tonners are different from those we use in singapore. I do not know if they have changed since when i was there though.

Shotgun SG

Aiy.. most of the injuries sustained from 5 ton is cos nobody wears the stupid seat belts. But then again, those seat belts do nothing good to the testicles.

fudgester SG

So how are they going to go about doing this? Are they going to replace the canopies of the five-tonners with metal plates or something?

Strange - why the order come from Wong Fong Engineering and not ST & friends .

FYI - WONG FONG ENGINEERING WORKS is a local company that specialise in Load handling & Waste handling systems for the road transport and waste disposal industries.

Remember, your rifle was made by the lowest bidder. Laughing

If you notice the problem in iraq which the supply columns are constantly hit nowadays, without any armour all are easy targets. The US soldiers are improvising armour on their vehicles at first which see great result. Nowaday even the US army are working to amour up the trucks.

So think Singapore learn something from there too.

1M is on the research or 1M is on the purchase of the armor?

if so, $1M for all vehicles, is like machiam 20-30k for each tonner ....looks cheap to me. Very Happy

Dude... I will be a great pity to MINDEF if ST is the sole supplier to its needs. ST looks at the bottom line more often than not, while effectively emasculating other domestic defence contractors, due to their more influential branding as a GLC.

Fatum SG

what other contractors ... there are no other local defence contractors ....

Si Geena SG

Thanks dude... Thanks for hitting my point home...

so were the bullets, now better as ex lowest bidder " i think"no more, last time use to have of bad ones.

worth every cents if it works.

i wonder who is going to be the shooters and who are the ones in the truck for test firing.

LazerLordz SG

The uparmor on US trucks and Hummers were somewhat done back in their home state by welding heavy duty steel plate to the sides of the vehicle.

Are we doing the same?Wong Fong Engg.. Laughing

from what i read, the Aztik armour is just toughen up and treated layers of fabric. Meaning it’s like kelvar?

AF2005 SG

so very much lighter.
