My edited post explains why I think it'll take a long time before they send people up to space. Not because they can't technologically - but financially.

The French and Indians have been building rockets and sending satellites up to space for a long time. So I'm sure India will be the next Asian country to send someone up. That China beat them to it must've pissed them off badly. And France will be the first Western European.

China's feat of sending people up was already achieved by US and USSR in the late sixties - 40 years ago. So the technology is nothing new. Just blooming expensive to get all the gear, training, trials etc into place.

Let me ask you something.
Singapore does not have a national car, right (not a diss)?
Lets say the government decides to launch a national automobile industry. Tell me, will the 1st Singapore national car use the same technology as the first Ford car that came out over 100 years ago? Rolling Eyes

I don't know much about the space technology that China is using. But don't assume that because they are doing the same thing US and USSR did 40 years ago, then they must also be using the technology of 40 years ago.

China space technology is still below par compare to the USA and USSR. But the recent ShenZhou Flight in 2004 & 2005 had proven that Chinese Space technologists had managed to integrate the USSR tech into the Shenzhou Space programme.

More importantly, Chinese space agency has successfully done 2 repeatable manned space flights after the USA and USSR. We can expect to see a great inflow of USSR talents into China, and provide a great boast in China technological Great Leap Forward in 2010 - 2020 time frame.

In addition, the space technologies could also be used in both civilian and military application. We will see China as a new tech leader in radar, signal, semiconductors and aerospace industries sooner than we expect, in around 5years down the road.
