Hmmm Was lookin up a bit on the 101st Heliborne regiment today. Its part of US's rapid deployment force to any combat zone around the world.

Now, the riflemen of the 101st are proficient in fast-roping in to a combat zone via a hovering blackhawk. I think its called heli-rappeling in SG.

Anyways, their equipment composes of Blackhawk helicopters, Apaches, Kiowa Scouts, Chinooks and other land/suppport equipment such as Light vehicles and 155mm field howitzers deployabe via Chinook.

Looking at our own Guards units, u think that we could have been modeling after the 101st in some ways?

We do have similar equipment, Super Pumas, Apaches, Chinooks, (dunno wad scout helo we have), LSVs, air-liftable field howitzers.

Just a note that roping is not the same as rapelling. Rapelling requires a carabina to secure the soldier to the rope while roping is totally dependent on the 3 contact points of the body to the rope.

Shotgun SG

Then what is our terminology for fast-roping?

quivalen SG

roping. just roping.

Yes, the sinking of the 2 battleships and the bombardment of the civilian population. The destruction of all Allied air assets in the air and on the ground. Also the sinking of more shipping especially those carrying soldiers and civilians fleeing Singapore.

During the actual fighting in the jungles, Jap aircraft did carry out a lot of sorties on Allied ground troops. In one case they dropped a bomb square on a Allied infantry field HQ killing many officers. But these were not in any way instrumental in the Allies' eventual defeat in the ground war, were they? It wasn't aircraft strikes that the Allied ground troops were running away from.

The determining factor in the ground war was still the Jap troop's fighting skills and determination.

Hell, it was not even the tanks as one book I read said that the tanks were badly used by the Japs. They were sometimes used without infantry support. I read one instance where a lone Australian anti-tank gun knocked out 6 Jap tanks driving round a road bend one at a time. This gun fought on until destroyed or ran out of ammo. The gunner survived, while his mates were killed off, i think.

Force Z was actually supposed to travel with a carrier escort. (British believed the carriers are meant to escort the bbs, not the other way round, JAps too. *grin*)

But their carrier escort ran into some trouble and had to turn back. Instead of turning the whole force z around, they asked the Repulse and Prince of wales to carry on.

It is the 101st Air Assualt "Division".... and not "regiment".

Shotgun SG

Heh, my apologies. Not familiar with their terminalogy also.

The carrier was HMS Indomitable which was a light carrier but with Hurricanes and some Spitfires onboard. But carrier struck reef in West Indies and never reached Singapore. Imagine what would have happened if the carrier safely reached Spore with its planes.

More dead planes for the Brits

As a matter of fact, Jap soldiers are not as deadly as many believed. Jap soldiers appeared deadly, because they striked fear into the heart of their enemies by performing beheading enemies and slaughtering civilians. As a result, many poorly trained soldiers fled or surrendered when they faced off with jap infantry.

It was often noted that Jap patrols were only confined to the city area where they had sufficient back-up. The rest of villgaes were under the control of the Anti jap elements. The Jap armies were regularly attacked / ambushed by these freedom fighters throughout the 3years and 8mth.
