Warrant Officers Messes

My understanding of Warrant Officers in the Singapore Army is that like WOs in other Commonwealth Armies, they are senior enlisted personnel rather than officers.

Can anyone tell me whether WOs are part of the Officers Mess or whether like those in the British and Australian Armies, they are members of the Sergeants Mess?

And on the issue of saluting, discussed elsewhere on the forum, the only Warrant Officers I know about that are saluted are those in the US Army where WOs are classified as officers.

as i know lao cik are members of o mess. saluting wise i dun know coz i dun have to salute to officers at my squadron. but some encik are nice ppl Mr. Green

There are different standards in every unit. Some units have seperate WO messes while some units have WOs share the Officers mess. For decorum purpose, salutes are only accorded to commissioned officers although not many are so tight-arsed for it. WOs are given the courtesy of being called a “Sir” by specialists and enlisted personnel, and in some cases by junior officers.

Very unusual to find an army where enlisted personnel share a mess with officers. US WOs are members of the officers mess but then unlike WOs in most armies, they are classified as officers.

Not saluting WOs and junior ranks addressing them as 'Sir' is consistent with other Commenwealth Armies, but I've never heard of junior officers addressing WOs as 'Sir' Shocked

I won't exactly term our WOs as enlisted personnel as they have to go through an intensive course after years of service to qualify for that rank so often they are treated on par with junior officers. Its also not surprising for junior officers to call the Regimental Sergeant Major as "Sir" and I often do refer to my WO colleagues as "sir" from time to time as a show of respect.

So are they regarded as equivalents to WOs in e.g. the British and Australian Armies?

The link below is interesting, particularly the NATO rank equivalents at the bottom of the web page. 'OF' refers to 'Officer 'OR' to Other Rank. Quite a good way of comparing ranks with other armies.

Having no contact with both armed forces stated, I dun think I'm qualified to comment on that. I'm also too lazy to speculate. Mr. Green

2WO/1WO (Singapore) = WO2 (UK)
MWO/SWO (Singapore) = WO1 (UK)
