ditzy SG Looks like one of those test firing chambers, but if you asked me, frankly, it looks like a .......
dkhoo SG That is a German silencer for 155mm artillery. It is not meant to be used in combat. It is used during gun testing to avoid annoying nearby civilians, and to reduce the chance of hearing damage for the testers.
dragg SG i was from artillery. frankly i cannot stand the noise. impressed with those taiwanese obasan standing just beside the gun selling drinks to SAF soldiers while they fire live rounds.
zanshin SG this is really eye-opening, never knew that a silencer actually exists for arty. even if it was only for tests. i still remember how i was shocked when asked to pull-through the 52-caliber fh2000 with oil.( was a fresh OETI trainee then), told ourselves what a huge 5-piece rod(actually 7 piece). We were thinking if we need to pull-thru everynite before sending arms in unit life. (such silly thoughts as a new bird)
Moonstriker SG i wonder how long the SP commander is gonna take to plug that small barrel of his into that big big so called silencer.
tvdog SG Live fire M-16 without earplugs is already very deafening. I once forgot my earplugs and after just the first target I was practicallly deaf. I threw a handgrenade during BMT and that was pretty damn loud. I don't know if in war time we'd be wearing earplugs or not. Even at outdoor range it is so deafening can you imagine in FIBUA? I was once near a M113 firing blanks from the .50 at Sungei Gedong and I thought that was pretty noisy. The M113 itself was pretty noisy engine and tracks sounds etc. Of course the howitzers are the king of noise but even so-called "recoiless" rifles are very loud. During battalion live fire the people to avoid are the 84mm RR guys. That is one loud SOB. The ground shakes when that thing fire. I pity the 84 guys. And the the worst is the now obsolete 106mm RR used to be mounted on jeeps. I saw one live fire demo on video and it looked like the jeep jumped up when the gun fired and there was a big backblast of dust. I imagine the noise must be tremendous.
ditzy SG I forgot to put ear plugs when I went for section l/f once. I thought i was going to die right there from the noise. OMFG, every time I squeezed the trigger, BING! the sound just resonated to my eardrums, and it was not only from my rifle. I made it out alive, but that night, I was sure I was going to go deaf the next day.
ditzy SG The 84rr is ground shaking, but the feeling of a little backblast even thru your boots, is something unforgettable.
dragg SG when the whole battalion fires (about 12-16 155 howitzer guns) together the feeling is like the sound actually shoots through your heart. i remember vivdly the ducks all jumping after the shot. frankly i dont like the feeling. imagine the taiwanese villagers bearing with the noise pollution of our live-firing for so many years.
tvdog SG I heard you 155 boys fired on a few TW villages some time back. True? or urban legend? Another was that there was a big gangfight at a place in Kaoshiung called "dixiajie" - underground street - between SAF and local "tai-bao" during which the place caught fire and burned. True? When I was there during NSF, we got into a small scuffle with local people during R&R in Kaoshiung. We were quickly outnumbered and made a quick withdrawal under harrassing fire.
tvdog SG Another question is whether the new 155 – including the SP – do they have a three-round burst capability or is it my imagination?
Moonstriker SG the 3 round burst capability on the FH2000 is because of the flick rammer. If the incorporate it on the LWHS or the R**** , sure it'll have 3 round burst firing.
