some shops do employ scrambling techonologies when they detect you try to copy a DVD/VHS

VCDs are very easy to copy. Almost drag and drop will do it.

DVDs got more protection, but a decent ripping software shall do the trick.

Dunno if making backups for personal usage is legal or not.

It is not legal to even do a backup........ but as if most of us give a da**. I rip or convert the movie to Divx and download into my MPEG4 player....... Mr. Green

there is no way to prevent the movie from being copied ... u can use software, or an encoder when u play the movie (non detectable)... the only way is to provide free Smile

if there's a anti piracy program, surely there will be some hackers working on some program to bypass it.

Making a copy for personal backup is allowed for, under the Copyright Act, provided you own a single license prior. But you may not use it for commercial purposes or public viewing,

Maybe in Singapore it's allowed for.

I remembered clearly that someone high ranking from a movie studio saying that if you want to do back up, buy another original DVD of the same movie. There's no way I can forget this.

Well, that's my understanding of the Copyright Act.

Anyway, when anyone high-ranking from the studios or the media speaks, I become skeptical, extremely skeptical. I simply do not trust these people and their agenda. Laughing

Sounds legal for me.

Maybe it's because I didn't read the updated Copyright Act last year. But the Copyright Act is very very simple. No duplication, unless for review, educational uses and some other uses I can't remember.
