I am really old soldier era ! Even in my reservist in the 90s, I
missed range for various reasons. But during my NSF time in the mid
80s, Mindef realised that the range test that was conducted was
rubbish. It was composed of static shooting, eg at 300 m in foxhole
etc etc. It was only one aspect of actual combat shooting, which
everyone knows is mostly shooting at moving targets, on the move,
behind cover and probably close ranges from 100m down to 20m.
What I remember was that they introduced (we were the guinea pigs
in 1983 -4) CTSS, Combat Tactical Shooting System. Meant to test
every soldier from foxhole at 300 m , moving targets at 100m, down
to "instinctive shooting" at 25m. All these in one session.
I guess the shooting test has probably refined this today.
