at one stage, one of my closer buddies who's bday falls on boxing day always held a xmas cum bday bbq at his place every year. but since 2 years he's gotten married and had a daughter, so no more bbq, and no more meeting with the guys, and even if we did, maybe only a handful, at most 15 of us.

Thanks - I'm sure we'll have a blast. Yeah, our guys are pretty tight. We had our first gathering in December (this coming one's a short follow-up to bring in the guys we missed the first time), and Ng Heng Chew, our OC, was pretty chuffed that we managed to get so many guys together. Then again, he built the company, and that's a guy I would attach the "legend" title to.

Anyway, these reunions are going to be an annual affair. I heard from the OC of 2 Coy of 1977 that they just had their reunion a couple of weeks ago.

Any idea if you there is a safer way of simulating a drowning w/o puttin the trainee's head in a tub which took the life of 2SG Hu and almost took the life of CPT.Ho.

Read from SAS that they use a pillow case or sack which has been soaked with water and place it over the trainee with his hands tied...it gives a feeling of drowning w/o actually drowning.And saw a SEAL footage of them blindfolding a trainee and the cloth blindfold extends over the nostrils and water is poured into the trainee's mouth continuosly...

CAn anyone share if the SAF practices the above two methods and if are they safer then the actual act of dunking and diggin their nose to prevent them from holding their breath.

Those who do not know what had actually happened at the dunking or do not know Pandiaraj personally, please do not defame him.

I know this guy, he was my commander years back. He is a great man.
I am sure you have heard about the notorious Ranger Cadres from my camp and what they do and can do. But Raj, he's different yet better than most.
Like some who have said earlier, he is truely a family man but he also places his country ahead. It will really be a pity if his career has to be affected by this case. I hope and pray that his appeal goes through.

This dunking matter was an example of how the organisation works. Raj was not part of this other than being the Officer to approve the training which many others before him had done the same. The boy did not die in his hands, nor did Raj instigate the two other officers to handle the dunking exercise in an apparently different way. There is a proper procedure to conduct this exercise, but the two officers went beyond that and caused the death of the soldier. I went through the water dunking myself too. It is not as bad as what people think. If it's that dangerous, you and your friends better not go to the swimming pool and play those drowning games.

Enough said. Nobody wanted this to happen. But it still did.

Seems that we have forgotten Warrant Officer S Balakrishnan as well. I knew him when he was a MSG or SSG {really cannot remember…damn long liaoz :p} during POW training and he struck me as a reasonable and nice person who gave tough training but yet humanistic. Each night he will ensure the trainee’s good health and would not unnecessary put the trainee’s health at risk. It is a pity for him.

No, I haven't forgotten him. Unfortunately, he went to ground after the story broke, and I haven't been able to contact him and get his side of the story.

Anyway, I knew him when he was a platoon sargeant in another company because we had mutual friends in the battalion. While I personally knew him to be a top bloke, he did have a reputation in the battalion as the wild sort. You account matches what I'd heard about him while I was overseas, namely that he'd mellowed out a lot. Unfortunately, with his past, he didn't stand much of a chance in this witch hunt.
