S'pore launches elite maritime anti-terrorist assault unit

Singapore launched on Wednesday an elite police maritime unit to increase security of the Republic's busy commercial shipping lanes and ports against potential terrorist attacks.

The unit has specialised skills and equipment to board vessels, engage the enemy in close-quarter combat and conduct assault diving, Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs Ho Peng Kee said at the commissioning ceremonies here.

Officially labelled the 'maritime assault capability' of the Special Tactics and Rescue (STAR) Unit, Professor Ho said it had been created as part of a broader programme to beef up security for Singapore waters.

He said the new force would augment efforts of the police coast guard and the Singapore Navy.

aiyah, wayang only, abit of vessel boarding equal maritime anti-terror liao......wahhh.....as if. can fool public cannot fool me lah....all the same one lah, no difference from SDU/NDU/STS one...only the flash is different. end up still STS/PCG 'frontline' 1st....

dis is called image propaganda, to prove we are still working on anti-terror and not slacking.

yawn...surprise me leh....have seen enough wayangs liao....say until so good, a simple straight fiorward 'barricaded suspect' real case crops up took over a few hrs to settle and...the best part is dat the hostages ownself escape and they claim it is a mission welldone still....really welldone leh..... Laughing

John Ching SG

Maybe its a back up team to support the 1st assault party, in which case is likely to be the PCG. Rolling Eyes
Like in the army, SEALs are lords of the water & Green Berets are lords of the land but that doesn't stop them from fighting for mission of each others. Mr. Green

zenden9 SG

Hmmmm… Another Hollywood production from what I saw in the news.

chunyong SG

Laughing , i didn't see but its a big wayang after all, i think they must have rehearsed many times....hahahahah

Special units need to be good in everything la…..theyre probably just showcasing maritime CT ops…..its not like a totally new unit or anything…

Arena SG

in july u will see rsn come up with a sqn which are to perform boarding ops...

btw these new units aint really that well-trained as compared to the hardcore original like sof/star/ndu....
i know ppl who are going or already in the new form unit n there are really doubt about their ability.... if they just make up these unis for show then ok lah...
if really goes into ops with them, then hmmmm.. god bless...
better stick with the old sof/star/ndu

chunyong SG

aiyah, as i have already said....its all a big wayang....they have screwed up in a simple mission right in our eyes....screw the humji STAR commander...

Paladin SG

Screwed up in a simple mission? What mission?
Interesting.. can u elaborate? Your source?

chunyong SG

star not hardcore one, cos the new CO humji gia...not the older gungho Patrik Tay TM liao....

chunyong SG

a simple barricaded suspect case....suspect only have a knife. by 'law' and by what is taught and practiced many many times the outcome/plan is definitely not 'wait for 5 hrs for the hostages to ownself escape'....hostage escape then they use dynamic entry....Horse Behind Cannon....big wayang show.

the same case give SWAT is a matter of mins niah....practice so much, yet a simple clearcut case flop liao, still dare say 'successful'...balls lah

dumbdumb! SG

the only elite thing is the name

chunyong SG

last time Patrick Tay ard better.... Confused

SingaporeMacross SG

I thought the police coast guard already has something like this? Isn't it a bit redundant?

Perhaps the ambitions of the police are growing.

sidestep1984 SG

its not a new unit....theyre just showcasing maritime capabilities of STAR....thats all...

John Ching SG

If RSN is indeed going to have a Sqn which perform boarding ops officially in july, depending on how you got your info, aren't you breaking information security? Mr. Green

I believe the ideal of the Singapore Navy for setting up this boarding parties is just to minimize the unnecessary deployment of other hardcore units. As for these less hardcore units, its really up to how they train & the experience that they get for carrying out their duties. Neutral

Arena SG

i just gives u a foresight into what's coming up....
just mark my words and few mths later, set ur eyes on the news...

the following is based on my observation and deductions:
a sneek preview is that this newly formed unit will consists a small miniority of personnel who are well-trained and majority of people who I can say not really up to it if you wanna compare them to what the job reallys needs or even to the infantry...

f50_vapor SG

so where did the STAR learn their maritime capabilties? frm NDU?

chunyong SG

they learn navigation from STS. capabilities i no comment abt it.
