I don't really get why Singaporeans would want to take sides in a PRC-ROC conflict. Look at the facts and not the rambling rhetoric.

If there's a war, no matter which side wins, we (Singapore) will lose.
Points to note:
1) If war breaks out at least one side will get badly burned. At least one (or even both) of the Chinese economies will collapse. This will definitely hurt us. We either lose one partner or both.

2) If war breaks really breaks out, most of the navies in the region will either be directly involved in the conflict or be busy securing their respective nation's own maritime borders. A large stretch of the Pacific Ocean will probably be left unguarded and unpatrolled. With the recent terrorism scenarios involving Oil/Cargo ships, do you really think a major port like Singapore will be safe?

There are a dozen other reasons why this potential war will not be good for us. This might sound a bit cold, but at the end of the day, we can't let ourselves get caught up in other nation's dirty business. We have to look after ourselves.

The one china policy might sound like we're "sucking up" or "kow towing" but believe it or not we're not siding the Chinese or Taiwanese. We're just taking care of the people that matter: Singaporeans.

Ah, you would be surprised, during the great floods of china not too long ago,
many chinese "Hui Guan" actually did alot of work asking for relief funds for the victims in china that time. Hold tin cans, sell flowers, isnt that being done by students nowadays? Ah, you mean they did that long time ago during Sun Yat Sen period? Wow!

But my point is, if I noe there would be such a fund to help taiwan in time of war, I would do my best to help.

China had better remember how Spore has helped China all the while from Deng XiaoPeng era till now. Economically, politically and socially.

There is a subtle difference between defense force and army.
Take the Japanese for e.g, they dun call themselves an army, they call themselvs defense force. Their troops will not initiate a fight, will only fight to defend when provoked. They cant even send troops to fight a war, only for peace-keeping.

Taiwan's troops use this policy when it comes to their military

I was trying to set up a country-code lookup list based on this standard, and here's an entry I found :

TAIWAN, PROVINCE OF CHINA;TW

This list is from ISO, the International Standards Organisation. Which, presumably follows the official country names recognized by the United Nations.

So, in the eyes of the UN, I guess that makes Taiwan a "Province of China".

I guess that'll probably make some Taiwanese a little unhappy Razz

Singapore is not taking sides. We are supporting a one-China policy precisely because of the reasons stated. Taiwan declaring independence will result in war, which is what we are trying to pre-empt.

At the moment, status quo seems best and that is what Singapore is pushing.
