tankee1981 SG I have read a newspaper article from another forum saying that they are trying to pass a bill in parliament. The bill states that it will be mandatory for all male citizens aged between 18 to 45 to serve. This is to beef up the Indonesian defence. Please comment. Thanks
bcoy SG Indonesia's military is mostly for territorial defense. The majority of its army for example, is used for territoral defense, prevent uprisings, internal security and keeping the peace within its assigned military regions and districts. Any National Service plans for them will be likely for the same purpose. These units will be used for local security. However, this is not confirmed - there is debate, as funds for National Service can be used instead to improve the current all professional force. I have visited and lived with Indonesian friends - its quite interesting to find out about the Indonesian military. They have a wide range of units.
laurence82 SG They dont have the money. I have trained with Indonesian soldiers during my OETI days, and they told me stories of how their units cannot afford to luxuriously replace vehicles parts like we did, according to the demands of our MAC. Each copper washer or bolt has to be dug out or modified from somewhere. But their field training is tougher, if not tactically better. And they really take care of each piece of uniform or equipment they have. Something we should learn from them.
want to know SG What if they have the money! If the bill is successfully. National Service is successfully implemented in Indonesia. Since you said Indonesian soldier have tougher field training than Singaporean soldier. Does that mean that a Indonesian reserve/conscript soldier is much much better train than a Singaporean reserve/conscript soldier. Indonesia National Service will be much tougher and of higher standard than Singapore National Service.

In what way I imply they will definitely be better than us in combat? But then again, we wont want to reach that stage to find out isnt it?
Moonstriker SG one thing they will and already have and we dont... combat experience. currently have 2 indo soldiers training in my wing and we chat often. i ask them abt their military and any experiences in real life combat..
John Ching SG From what I understand about theplan for the Indonesian National service is that it would be no different from that of the Malaysian National service. The ideal is that National service would enable the younger indonesian of different race or enthic background, religion, et cetra, to mix together in-order them to better understand each others cultural traditions, common history, religion, et cetra. The planned National service is more for the interest of National, & internal, security.
beavan SG they got a big place to defend, and furthermore, their president was some general, maybe he places a higher emphasis on defense
