Devilsmarlin SG hey there all! read in my MTO's office an article about the RPG 7 and its role in the war in afganistan.... but i'm still puzzle what makes it still relavant in a world of tanks with reactive armour and other stuff?
[email protected] SG cheap n cheerful tanks may have reactive armour but helicopters don't. as soviet Hinds n US Blackhawks found out...
storywolf SG No all part are cover by armour. That is why tanks and IVF need troops to keep enemy troop at a distance, if enemy get to get close, they will soon find a weak spot , and RPG 7 still pack a punch enough to cause damage.
SpecOps87 SG RPG 7 is basically a pretty idiot-proof weapon.Even in Somalia, militiamen who are uneducated are able to shoot and effectively take down state-of-the-art BlackHawk choppers with it.Goes to show that unlike Western manufactured weapons which are demands the weapons to be precise and reliable, while Russian weaponry are designed to be easy to use and easily mass produced. Its the same as the M16 vs AK47...
John Ching SG All of the above reason including the fact that anyone can build their own RPG launcher in any decent mental workshop. Of course, the ammo it self is a whole different story. Also, RPG 7 is quite light, at 10+kg with round loaded, to carry for long distance ontop of the fact that its damn easy to use. A firer need not have to really aim the damn thing to fire at a target as the aiming system is basically crap piece of metal with 3 or 4 holes to judge your distance. When USSR changed to the current Russia( I can't remember its exact name ), they needed money badly. So they sold a large among of their arms to the black market, USD$15 can get you an AK-47 at that time. So you can guess what the RPG cost would have been then.
khyron1 SG As noted, RPG-7s are cheap and easy to use. Not only that, even if the MBTs are impregnable to RPG rounds, the same cannot be said for IFVs, APCs, MPVs and soft-skins.
ultimax100 SG in war, you use what you can find. As with the AK47, the RPG weapons system is widely, and cheaply, available, hence it's continued use despite being almost half a century old.
Johnston SG Yes, after filling the sky with unknown numbers of RPGs. So it's the same idea as firing into the air with rifles and machine guns. Enough hits, and pop goes your weasel.
