Just for info, I know for a fact that the U.S troops were rather impressed by the standards of the S'pore armed forces considering the fact that the S'pore t...

Just as a point of interest, it was in JOTC that Charlie Beckwith met some instructors from the British SAS and started developing his idea for Delta.

What is a lifers? Question

May be the Americans are being too polite!

Gedanken SG

Lifers are career soldiers. Given that the US military only takes regulars, they are pretty impressed with the SAF’s standard as a conscript army.

John Ching SG

Lifers refers to guys who sign on with the military till they retire. Mr. Green

Why can't you accept the fact that your army is being recognised as a professional force? Confused

sidestep1984 SG

actually this is partly wrong..he was on an exhange thingy with the SAS...he was so overly inspired with the SAS that he pushed for a US Army equivalent ala SFOD-D...he was their first CO...onli to be mudsucked on the failures of Desert One where majority of the blame is pushed unto him...

Gedanken SG

I think it's that "Asian modesty" thing rearing its ugly head again.

Gedanken SG

You're right - there was the exhange as well. Forgot about that. Embarassed

and SEAL TEAM SIX(now called NAVSPECWAR DEVGRU) was designed by Richard Marcinko during the aftermath of DESERT ONE where there came a need of a SEAL command equivalent to SFOD-D....really interesting stuffs...one is regimented training with an example from SAS...another had a 6 month hectic training programme(in its beginning) with no examples from anyone....both doing a heck of a job at what they do..

Gedanken SG

I prefer to take anything to do with Marcinko with a huge pinch of salt – his reputation’s pretty spotty.

sidestep1984 SG

well..if one is in his shoes...and share the same belief...they'd do the same....

bcoy SG

They train in West Malaysia too, conducting the same type of exercises. A couple of years back - I bump into a number of US Marines in Malacca on a guided RnR tour. They were hosted by the guys from the Malaysian RDF.

The Malaysian army Ranger Unit? I think you may have mistaken with the commandos/special forces group. The Royal Malaysian Ranger Regiment is actually a regiment consisting of conventional Infantry battalions, Mechanised Infantry battalions and a single Airborne Infantry battalion distributed across the the operational divisions and brigades. Despite the word "Ranger", they are not commandos or special forces. It comes from a traditional line dating back to the British colonial days.

Thanks for answering my question!

Actually i find it very difficult to believe.

TomClancy SG

We trained well and fight well. Cool

More information at http://www.military.com/ Cool

Sardaukar SG

interesting stuff.of course, the discussion has kind of deviated from the original subject.

so basically, everyone has a good impression of the individual American soldier. Is that it?

Geforce3 SG

According to my Messing warrent, they did trained with my brigade, i think US Marines, they were good enuff to finish off my brigade (with bns lar) in 2 jrs during a coastal hook i think, but they are abit siao one lar

want to know SG

Sorry but i don't quite understand. Please explain more detailly. Thanks!

You mean the US Marines annihilated your brigade in just 2 hours. WOW! Shocked Shocked Shocked They are really that good. Have a Singaporean army unit ever in the history of the SAF ever win against the US Marines before? What is the casualty rate 1(US Marine) to 20(Singaporean Soldier)? Question

What do you mean by (they are abit siao one lar)?

LazerLordz SG

How would the Marines, fare, let’s say in a jungle environment fighting a loosely spread out OpFor?

Geforce3 SG

Well, the marines had their amphibious tanks, coupled that with the fact that we were waiting for them in the wrong place hahha. More details i can't give u since it was my messing warrent who told me this

John Ching SG

Its not your soldiers fault for lossing to the jar-heads. Jar-heads don't believe in fighting in small force or fighting fair for that matter. Even their new Spec Ops trainning is much different from other Spec Ops trainning. Neutral
Instead of a small group of 4,7 or 14 men Spec Op trainning, MARINEs train in 14, 28 or a whole bat trainning, including gunships & naval fire power. Mr. Green

sidestep1984 SG

there was once a downed pilot in Bosnia(true story arh...not the movie one)

the marines came in with everything...artillery....troops....gunships....

as long as it gets the job done

and thus comes the saying....

Cracking a peanut with a sledgehammer..

and not forgetting....

shock and awe...

THE END....

Oh yuh...during Gulf War 1... A marine force was playing Angel of Death from Slayer(with amps on their HUMVEES) while attacking Saddam's forces....(I'm really NOT kidding)

THE END again..
