Home-grown radar allows soldiers see through walls
DEFENCE engineers said on Thursday that they are developing a radar
that will allow counter terrorist forces and search and rescue
teams to 'see' through concrete walls to detect movement
DSO National Laboratories, Singapore's largest defence research and
development organisation, has revealed that its 'through-wall radar
surveillance system' has been successfully tested in trials since
the project began in mid 2002.
These involved scanning solid concrete walls some 30cm thick from
various distances.
Mr Tan Chee Seng, DSO's Director of Sensors, said the radar is
being improved so it can scan thicker walls even when placed 100m
or more away, yet portable enough to be carried on a soldier's
back.
Engineers are also tweaking the radar so it will be sensitive
enough to 'see' whether a person is armed from the radar
image.
The few countries involved in such research usually prefer to keep
the technology to themselves, Mr Tan said
