TOKYO, Aug 23 (AFP) -

Japan's government said Wednesday it was looking at criminal charges
against Mitsubishi Motors Corp. after the firm admitted to covering up
customer complaints about defective vehicles for decades.

Analysts warned the scandal had caused untold damage as the share price of Japan's fourth largest automaker, 34-percent owned by German-US giant DaimlerChrysler AG, tumbled 6.5 percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The cost of punitive action could reach billions of dollars, said Shinichi
Yoshizawa, an official in the Transport Ministry's auto safety division....
"The scandal is a devastating blow to the company. It has shattered its
brand image," said Kazue Mayuzumi, senior market analyst at Nikko Securities....

"Unfortunately, I have no option but to admit that the report reflects a
truly regrettable state of affairs at our company," Kawasoe [MMC President] said.

The company announced it was recalling an additional 88,015 cars, trucks and buses suffering from a variety of problems that were concealed from MOT inspectors.

...An additional 90,000 vehicles built between December 1990 and June this year would be recalled to add to 532,000 recalled last month.

Covered in the Japanese recall are...7,202 models of the popular Lancer sedan

i think the question here is on ethics and morals rather then a factor to consider when saying a car is good or not. lets say a mclaren f1 is built in a poverty stricken rural town of india using kids averaging 7 years old who are paid 20 cents for 16 hrs of work a day.

is it wrong to do so? yes.

is the mclaren f1 a great car at the end of the day? of course.

out of the box, the performance of the m3 was proven to be better during a drag between my fren's e8 and the m3. the e8 got ahead on the 1st and 2nd gear before the m3 snuck up on my fren and took him in 3rd. the rest is history. both are more or less equally competent in corners IMO but for that amount of money, the m3 better had something to show.

That's interesting cos on 5 Nov 2004 there was a friendly "showdown" in Sepang. Three BMW M3s of various levels of mods vs 3 Evo MRs, one of which was basically bone stock. Outcome was Evo 3, M3 0.

An M3 CSL would be a different kettle of fish though. Wink

was it a straigtline or sort of a time trial around the tracks? hmmm, his was a GSR and he slowed down after the m3 started pulling away from him in 3rd. maybe the lighter and slightly more powerful MRs had a better chance? dun think he was beating down his own ride (i know he's even done some stuff on his car but he wun tell Evil or Very Mad )

who needs the CSL? gimme the m3 GTR anytime! Laughing

Straightline drag. Too many variances in driver ability for track timings to be meaningful, especially for Evos.

even if it a simple straightline drag, there are also things 2 consider like driver's skills (shifting at the rite point, correct launching technique assuming no launch control) and reflexes (a driver shifting faster 1/10 of a sec faster will end up saving 0.5 secs on reaching 6th gear. likewise, a slower response time when the lights are go would also be disadvantageous). though i would agree that all these factors are less significant in affecting timing in a drag race as compared to an actual all out track test.

I think u dont get my drift. LHD M3s for E.U. and US markets are made in automated factories in Germany. There, robots precision-weld the cars. RHD M3s r made in South Africa using low wage labour. Quality is inconsistent.
The fact that it sells well here shows that SGreans r brand-conscious suckers. nvr mind low quality. cheap and branded can liao !

I have some follow-up questions to your points, maybe you can enlighten: -

Are there any other BMW factories that make RHD M3s? If so, do you know which are the ones that have robots which precision-weld the cars and which ctries they supply the M3s too?

1) EU market receives RHD M3s.

2) All ///M-Series cars are made in factories in Europe, not SA.

3) ///M-Series cars are individually built by both hand and machine and will only be produced on order.

3) Lastly, I believe there isn't any "low quality" parts in my car? That or i must be blind.

honestly dude, IMO, u just wasted your 408k. how can u use a CSL as ur daily driver? unless u are a hardcore tracker, u shouldn't have bought it. or maybe it has been your dream car than i know how u feel.

u should have bought the Gransport, a more practical choice.
