How fast does a bullet travel?

i would like to ask how fast does a m-16 bullet and sar-21 bullet travels..

how do they calculate the speed?

comparing muzzle velocities. However, the speed of the bullet decreases with distance. You'ld probably expect about half muzzle velocity at max range. (as a rough guide)

speed of sound at sea level = 340m/s

M16 5.56mm - 2,800fps = 853m/s = 2.5 Mach

so at max usable range (400m) it would have dropped to approx 1.25 Mach.

Why do the math? When you've got technological gears to calculate it for you? You can even use the oldest & less technological method of calculating by using a high speed camera or VCR with timer. Laughing

SBSK: yes, its possible to dodge bullets in real life, when you enlist into Tekong give us a ring ok? During your range you can pretend to the Fig 11. and we all shoot at you and you will "learn" how to. Just make sure you wear black trench coat, sunglasses and leather pants hor? if not cannot dodge fast enough.

Oh yar i forgot, you want to measure the speed of the bullet right? You bring a stopwatch along with you. Normally you would hear the report of the bullet AFTER the bullet has slammed into your stomach/groin/leg but in your case, since you know how to siam bullets it should be fine.

990m/s is muzzle velocity....

The gunpowder, the cleanliness of the bore and grooves, and friction due to air slows a bullet down.

Most sniper rifles are between 2,700 to 2,900 fps (feet per sec). see http://www.sniper-training-guide.com/training-guide/000292.php.

From my hazy memory; M-16 muzzle velocity is 990 m/s (meters/sec) which using 3.28 conversion factor is 3,247 plus fps. M-16 is by far much faster.

The Speed of sound (or Mach 1) at sea level is 1,116 fps

Maybe the large calibre anti-material rifles (firing the .50 cal round) comes close at 2,912 fps (RAI Model 500).

Suprizingly the AK-47 which fires the larger 7.62mm round is slow (at 710 m/s or 2,328 fps) see http://www.sovietarmy.com/small_arms/ak-47.html.

All in all, you cannot 'siam' a bullet as it travels 3x faster than sound. You hear a crack (when the bullet flies past you) than a boom (the sound of the expended round), when acting as the butt party (in the old days of manual butt parties) raising and lowering the targets for range practice.

BIC ought to be the same but its too noisy to hear individual rounds (and is too close to GMPG).

you can ‘siam’ if you can see the tracers(speed of light) coming for you and you are almost at the maximum range. tough luck if they’re firing at you without tracers.

5.56 natos were designed to be high velocity rounds. Do not be surprised that a larger caliber round like the 7.62 warsaw type to be slow, it’s only logical. The cartidge is smaller than a 7.62 nato, and to top it off it has to transfer that energy to a larger round. Again, conservation of momentum. What’s more, the 7.62 is itself slower than 5.56 nato (generally speaking). The reason why snipers use 7.62 is it’s stability in flight, and it’s stopping power considering that snipers use only one shot to do the job.

In movies, if the heroes gets wounded by bullets, I don't think you would consider them heroes right? Don't you find it strange baddies go down with one bullet, but it takes eternity for the good guy to die? Very Happy

Flawed argument. You cannot see a tracer coming towards you - the chemical composition is housed at the rear of the bullet so that those shooting the bullet can see it.

If you can see the tracer, then you don't have to siam for it is not coming towards you Laughing

In theory it is possible to siamz bullet if you have sufficent reaction time and can see the bullet coming to you, in pratice, you are far better off taking cover.

Actually hor, in movies the characters don't really siamz bullets mah, they just run like mad and the baddies have really poor aim, sure all fail range one...
