C o c k r o a c h
Derby to be held in Singapore on Aug 10
SINGAPORE : It is a competition that is a cross between Fear Factor
and Amazing Race.
But in this one, the stars are no longer than a thumb, and they
will be crawling their way to success.
Many people view these creatures as squirming
creepy-crawlies.
But the organisers of Pest Summit want to make them racers and are
organising a C o c k r o a c h Derby, with a specially-built race
track which they have been testing.
100 adult American c o c k r o a c h e s will be taking part in the
event on August 10.
John Ho, Managing Director, Aardwolf Pestkare, said, "Around the
world, there are easily 1,200 species. The most common species in
Singapore, especially in households, is the American c o c k r o a
c h."
There will be 10 races with 10 participants, with each winner then
competing in the final for a S$1,000 prize money.
But what happens if they escape?
Mr Ho said, "Once they get off the track, we have assured the hotel
they will not disappear from the room. We will surround the area
with sticky traps so the c o c k r o a c h e s will be
caught."
So, if you do not have a pet c o c k r o a c h, looks like it is
time to start finding one, for what organisers hope will be a fun
race.
If you are not good at catching c o c k r o a c h e s, you do not
have to worry - the organisers will sell them for S$10
apiece.
And if you are not sure how to look after them, there are tips for
raising thoroughbreds.
The ideal age is between 1 and 2 months.
Size apparently does not matter when it comes to performance.
Dog biscuits make good c o c k r o a c h food - water is good
too.
Organisers remain tight-lipped on the fate of the c o c k r o a c h
e s after the race. - CNA/ms
