Well, I don't know the practice nowadays, that is of sending a
LCP or CPL to SISPEC and so on for Section Leaders
appointment.
At my time in early 1980s when my Arty unit ROD, there many gun
commanders (established rank of sgt) and 2ICs (who had undergone
the same courses as the commander) disrupted their ICT for studies
etc. In the end, out of the 8 gun NCOs in my former battery, only 3
were at the ICT for the 4 guns. One of the LCP of the detachment
was appointed the gun commander (once again, estab rank of sgt)
immediately (without going for any formal courses), and held the
appointment from then on.
Note that at my time, most gunners (and soldiers) were with little
education - almost all of the gunners in my battery were really
Hokkian pengs - with some able to handle a little mandarin! That
LCP was a Hokkian peng!
