Basically, there's nothing to prove to anyone in life. So long
as your life, property, or love one is not threatened, stay safely
out of trouble.
Defend, not offend.
In Singapore, violence gets BOTH parties involved in fight, in
trouble with the Law. In the USA, either one dies, or both dies.
Because they have guns, and their Police really have their hands
full! Can't get to you or anyone on time. In the US all you need
for a bullet in your face is just what you did - a middle
finger.
Well, if one's temper over-rules one's common sense, then that's
just too bad - the price for your actions may or may not be
irriversible. Think Rusian Roulette.
