Dear Poly student,
I am sure you are
concerned about University acceptance and possible reason on why
you were rejected. Your opinions would most likely be the same as
the following quote that came from a Republic Polytechnic (RP)
student who scored Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.4.
“I applied to the Business course in
both Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University
of Singapore (NUS). Both universities rejected my application! My
G.P.A. was 3.4 and that is actually pretty good. My friends Jason,
Mag, and Lincoln (from different diploma courses) also got about
same G.P.A. as me, and their applications have been rejected by NTU
and NUS as well. Even Mag who got G.P.A. 3.6! The chances of
getting into these universities are poor. RP must be really lousy.
I don’t think the universities here recognize RP’s diplomas. It is
probably because RP is the newest (5th) polytechnic in
Singapore. They do not take even the award
winners.”
POSSIBLE REASON FOR FAILURE (people who want to enter
university, please note the following mistakes
too
This statement is not entirely true, but i agree to
some of his claims. RP is indeed young and thus resulted in high
cut off points. Considering that 20% of your entry requirement is
from GCE ‘O’ level results, this could have affected his
acceptance. Your ‘O’ level results are used, so please be aware of
your ‘O’ level results as even if your poly G.P.A meets the
requirements, your ‘O’ levels could affect it.
Another possible reason to his failure would be that
Business in NTU and NUS are relatively high and is above G.P.A 3.4.
This could have resulted in him being unable to enter as he was not
in the top 90th percentile of his cohort. Being in RP is
not a factor that lead to his failure as there were others in other
poly who scored the same as him and failed too.*
Lastly, Local Universities also take note of your
CCA and other non academic achievements and award. This is to help
show that you are able to handle both studies and CCA
properly.
*please note that local universities recognised all
polytechnic diplomas.(refer to link)
SOME LINKS TO HELP YOU PLAN
This link shows a Table of actual GPA scores upper and lower
percentile of poly students admitted to NUS for various
courses
http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/gradeprofile/sprogramme-igp.html#tabel2
NUS prepared an FAQ to explain the table and also some other
interesting questions and answers

This page where all poly are represented is probably another
assurance that NUS does not discriminate against any
poly
