Mountain bike modification help needed

My friend just bought a 26" (wheels) moutain bike. According to the salesman, 26" is the standard size for this bike. We ask him whether it was possible to change the wheels to 24" and he said it was not possible.

The question is - can we modify the bike to fit a 24" wheels? If yes, what are the modification needed?

my friend is not very tall and she has to tip toe. Can manage but I am afraid will have problem on uneven terrain.

I notice if she tries a bike with 24" wheel her foot can touch the ground flat. I think reducing the wheel to 24" will make the sit height down by atleat 2".

I do see people changing the wheel whole set. But, not cost wisely.

I don't think its possible to modify or rather change the whole 26" wheels to a 24", but it is perhaps possible if it has a disc-brake option because if you are using V-brakes system or as such, the structure is totally and completely not made for 24".

Maybe, ask your friend to change to another smaller size of it or even get a new bike with a lower standover height.

shouldnt she have tried beforehand before purchasing the bike?
try asking the uncle what are the extreme methods to change the wheelbase to 24"

She did try quite a few and have been looking around pass few weeks. This particular one is extremely light and has easy to use gear shift (two lever for the left hand and two for the right hand. One lever to down shift and one for up shift and the shifting is damn accurate.) And it has the lowest riding position. There are a few 24" range but they were for kids. Ego probably got in the way of chosing this kids bike. Anyway the gear shift and weight of this kids range were not really good.

Standard wheel sizes for mountain bikes are 26" and 29". 29" more for touring. Since her ego got in the way for the kids range, I don't think she'll want the 24" wheels even if she could have it. Laughing

Yes, I think they are V-brakes. And that was what i think also. The brakes has to be change to accomodate the small diameter of the wheels. The original breaks pads will not reach the correct position if using 24" wheels.

What about the gears on the back wheel. Do you think it need to be change if we change to a 24" wheel?
