On the wide open field bounded by Yio Chu Kang Road, CTE, SLE
and Seletar Airport, is the 'BIG EAR' of Singapore.
The power of this electronic listening post was developed by the
British Military during the 1950s and 1960s, and has been
maintained and upgraded by our MINDEF with support from the
Telecommunication Authority of Singapore.
On at least one reported occassion, it has picked up the weak
distress signals of seamen drifting in the Pacific Ocean, and with
the S.O.S. being forwarded to the Royal Australian Navy for
immediate response.
