I was approched by a young boy and a young girl (teenagers) at
the foot of my block just now.
The girl called out to me and said that she and the boy are
sellng ice-cream to raise money for their mother who is very ill in
hospital. On hearing that I would presume that the boy is her
brother. The girl said they have only one box of ice-cream left.
She said she is selling at $16 and they can earn $4. They hope to
sell the last box and they want to rush down to the hospital to
visit their mother. They show me their styrofoam box and it was the
last box. They sound convincing and desperate.
I seldom buy or eat ice-cream. But out of pity, I agree to
buy from them. I only have $15 and the boy sold the box
of ice-cream to me. When I reach home, my wife saw the box of
'Magnolia' ice-cream I bought and told me it only cost
abt $6.
A while later I found the boy outside my flat
corridor selling another box to my neighbour. After that
he was using his handphone to call his friends to meet him at
the corridor. Then the same girl earlier and two more other
teenager turned up at the corridor with styrofoam box. I then
realise they are a group. They were happily pooling in their money.
I then knew their story is a fraud.
I went up to them and asked the boy how many of them
is selling ice-cream. I asked him why he told me its the last
box and why he lied to me. He just said "we are really leaving". I
hand the boy the ice-cream he sold me and demanded for my
money back. He gave me back my money and said sorry. After I went
into my flat, I heard one of them telling the boy as they were
going into the lift, 'You should have sold him at $10, you still
earn."
Just to let you guys know what I encountered. Sympathy
being abused.
