Did the Chinook carrying the State Flag on National Day set you off? Yes, VDS can be sheared off if it hits something solid. I recall reading at least one case of a Los Angeles boat pulling a fishing trawler underwater after the sub got entangled in the trawler's net. Joe Black SG 1st off, I like the National Flag in the latest picture! [/b]Can someone (ChineseJunk - hint hint, post the pics here for the unlucky few who didn't see it). Thanks .... Well, as the ASW tactics, didn't NATO (read USN) rely heavily on the use of Helo to chase subs? Once a sub is being detected, a helo will fly close to the sub position, drops sonabouyes or dipping sonars to locate the enemy sub, and drop the torpedoes accordingly. Does anyone know what tactics does the Swedish Navy deploy given that they operate in shallow Baltic waters... very similar to the surround straits around Singapore.

Also, http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=15987 [/b]I was in the stadium when she (Chinook with the flag) flew by.......tears came to my eyes. Big thing for me, I'm afraid. We have come a long long way haven't we? Yes! I'm not the oldest chap around but I remember the Alouettes, Hawker Hunters and Skyhawks. Used to attend those displays in Changi and for a teenager those days they rock! Navy was nothing back in those days. Today you are talking helicopter carriers! IMO they shouldn't have scrapped the Type A&B patrol crafts! Neither should they scrap the RSS Courageous too. Historic events.... I say the RSS Courageous should be made into a monument placed in the Padang with a huge National Flag and each year a parade should be held in memory of this event.
ChineseJunk SG Flags and banners day. The number 68 is huge siah. From miles away no need bino also can see.
Joe Black SG Is it common to have the number so far back? I thought they usually carry the number right in front somewhere near the anchor usually would be. Anyway, got the feeling one day we might read something about "Coalition ship 68" hee hee
damienthedevil SG From what I gather, the Delta will be armed with : 1. 32 VLS Aster 15 2. 8 Harpoon Block 2 RGM-84L 3. 1 76mm Oto Breda Super Rapido gun in Stealth turret ( It should have been at least a 100mm gun minimum for the Endurance class LSTs and for the Deltas ) 4. 2 triple ASW torpedoes tubes. 5. CIWS ??? - Wonder what's the CIWS for the Delta Frigate will be. Any feedback.
Fairyland SG That's a graceful looking ship! The lines are nicer than the Endurance class.........I like Are the Slyver cells able to accomodate Aster 30s in the future? Or is the hull too small to accomodate the extra length? I hazard a guess here that those decoy launchers are also a variant of Typhoon I think I'm close! Btw here's the link in defense aerospace on the weapons systems: http://www.defense-aerospace.com/cgi-bin/client/modele.pl?session=dae.2867716.1073608521&modele=jdc_34 I'm very happy to know they are not using the French Tavitac CICs! All the work going to the SOCCs didn't go to waste. I expect they will get into the TYPHOONS SSBNs that RSN will get to replace the Charlies based in Christmas Islands!
Fairyland SG Long range deep water sensors like ALOFTs and A244S torpedoes? Single Herakles radar for long range detection, classification and weapons guidance! Single Medium Class Helicopter on board! Suggests to me the Deltas are not designed to operate independently. Suggests to me the second 3 Deltas will not be the same and will probably fill up the gaps here?
ChineseJunk SG Fairyland ... TYPHOONS SSBNs that RSN will get to replace theCharlies based in Christmas Islands! Funny you should mention Christmas Islands. Incidently, the islands were administered by Singapore during colonial times. Really. Off topic but do you have any pix of the SAF Display at Changi Air Base? db

Wish I had though. Back in those days, I think safety wasn't so clearly defined yet. They flew very low then. One of the items was a very low simulated strafing run by a Hawker Hunter! Orgasmic.....will never forget that for the rest of my live. The only thing that ever come close was a F111 fly over Changi Camp at 50m on a simulated attack on 163SADA during an Adex. That was powerful sight (don't remember if sonic boom or not)......but not even close to our own Hunters.
Blue Dolphin SG Talking about low flying, I think the Kiwi A4 jockeys ARE still the lowest. They are used to simulate low level missile attack, for ships to respond with ASMD procedures. I guess they are no good against Formidable class.... with Aster 15, they are going to be fireball way beyond the visual horizon
SlowPoke SG That is still not the lowest…. Every year during Cope Tiger, a certain Thai prince (rumoured to be holding the rank of General in the RTAF) will “buzz” the flightline with his personal F-16A (specially painted with his personal paint scheme too) at Wing 1, Korat Air Base every morning. Its so low and fast and loud that the first time it happened, I dropped the stuff I was carrying and there were people ‘hitting-the-deck’. He flew so low that I can even make out the soot and oil stains around the JFS exhaust door…. But it happened so often that we got used to it and could carry on with our maintenance work….. Sometimes he would perform aerobatic stunts to entertain us, like pulling into a afterburner vertical climb right after takeoff…

[/b]You must have been around during the early 1970s to witness the Hawker Hunter flying with the RSAF, or did you see this plane flying at some foreign air show ?
Fairyland SG Was it that long ago?!!! Well, it's the first public flying display since the Skyhawks came out of the Lockheed hanger. Yah, there was Alouettes III and the most quiet of the lot - Skyvan! The C-130Bs was also on show too. The Strikemasters or Strikies must have been there too but somehow they don't make any impressions. Changi was still an airbase then. Yah maybe 1975 or a year or two earlier. Later in Paya Lebar I saw Hunters everyday for a while.
eurofighter SG Wonder if you guys have came across this site. http://www.mindef.gov.sg/weapons/frigate/
damienthedevil SG Just got the rational behind why SG Navy was going with the 76/62 Oto Breda super rapid gun for its LSTs and Delta Frigates. ( Most Navies inclusive of UK for the Horizon Projects and France are phasing out their 100m/127mm guns for this guns ) Very impress with SG navy planners. Will post info shortly ( And I’m not infringing any secret coz it is from Naval Forces – Monch Publishing ). What bothers me is, If the Delta is suppose to be stealth, why is the gun non-retractable for the stealth 76/62mm turret as in the case of the Visby Corvette ( True stealth feature )
