Dont have much on your circumstances so cannot really say but if I need a passport. I would go back and just tanhan it. If I dont need a passport + not a 1st class degree holder or scholar or high tech trained or engineer, I wouldnt even think about going back. I am in Shanghai now, and the only reason I am here is that I BELIEVE that I can make my own pot of gold here. I have already made up my mind to live here because I want to take part in its boom and get good returns in the process, to live and not just to stay alive. Essentially, I am Ah Beng in my heart and dont really care if the ppl around me are "Cheena" or not.

Wah you are in China, I believe they will be a super power one day. I do have a degree and work experience plus I have Australian passport thats why I am considering but whether army care about that or not I don't know, sometimes it is the luck of the draw.

So how is China at the moment? I heard it is very happening? so not coming back to Singapore anymore?

If you choose to server NS, you have no choice in your posting. The govt decide.

If you want to sign on as career soldier, it's 6 years. But you can break the contract after 5 years. 2.5 years is only for NS. If you choose to sign on, you can choose your career path. Example, you apply to be an Air Force technician or a signal specialist with the Army. You need not indicate your choice up front. You can decide during your BMT. During your BMT, you'll be able to make a better choice.

I'm from IT as well. I know of ex-Army guys who sign on as signal specialists and subsequently became managers with Alcatel. So, it depends on what IT specialisation you're in.

Please remember that if you serve half way and decide to quit, you'll be treated as a deserter. You can forget about coming back to Singapore forever because you'll end up in jail. This is worse than you not serving NS in the first place.

Physical fitness: running is very important. Do it as often as you can. Run 5km regularly and you should be fine.

Yeah I realise that I cannot select where I go after BMT. I will just have to wish for the best. I do 1st and 2nd level desktop support so it is not really anything special such as systems development. But I just don't want to become obsolete in the work force. Hope government can give me some good options.

just come back and serve your NS. many things can happen in 2.5 years.

the economy may boom. some old politician may die, the PAP may fall. the US might get nuked. whatever it is, things will happen. no point wasting grey matter pondering about things you cannot control.

rather, think of solutions should things turn bleak, if you can't secure a job in singapore after completing your 2.5 years, there's always the option of going back to australia for a job.

the world is big, don't restrict yourself.

I just spoke with Manpower, Immigration and Mindef. Here is the story, Mindef say cannot serve NS because I am not a PR or Citizen, Immigration say I cannot get PR status because I am not on Employment Pass. So they say I have to apply for Employment pass again. I applied last August but it was rejected and when I appeal it was rejected. They never gave a reason as to why it was rejected but I think it would be because I renounced without serving NS. The only way now is to be able to get PR status by at least working in Singapore for 5 years then I become eligible.

Aiyoh so sad man. Now I don't know what to do. i guess I will just have to reapply for Employment pass again.

I guess you have to do everything a foreigner needs to do, to get a PR.. Tough luck. But anyway, I've seen lotsa 'old men' in army.. They too just came back from donkey years overseas studies trip, or some had been AWOL( Absent Without Official Leave), but later surrendered, served Detention Barracks, then went on to BMT, most went Civil Defence tho...

But after a certain age, u do not need to serve NS to gain citizenship..

But its pretty ironic do ya agree? that seemingly tons of people wanna get out, while u have problems coming back?? Maybe its another pastels-are-greener-on-the-other-side-thingy. Anyway goodluck!

Hey Hellfire,

There may be more opportunities around the world but SIngapore will always be home. I like being a chinese and like seeing chinese people around. You never feel like a minority in SIngapore. I am currently working and the only chinese in the office. Sometimes it can be a little intimidating. I have also always had Malysian friends thus stay close to my own people. I guess I also like the hustle and bustle of Singapore. Although things are not as affordable in SIngapore or the sales people at lucky plaza are rude asses who don't know how to sell. I will still always feel happier in Singapore.

Australia has been an eye opener but never home I guess. I am going to give it another try, nothing to lose anyway.

Mr. Green i have some friendly advice to cure your home-sickness for Singapore. try staying in S'pore for a coupla weeks and have a feel of our employment prospects, business venture prospects and cost of living. i have a hunch you may not miss this island half as much as you do now. why not make your fortune in Australia first, gain more working experience there and you may get more bargaining power when getting a decent job in S'pore. you will be sought-after foreign talent by then. it will be too optimistic to give up your established career in Australia, hoping to find decent employment in, of all places, S'pore. here's a talk-cock idea i just thought of to share with you. you can find a wife to marry, either from Australia or whichever place and then time her pregnancy so that she gives birth when both of you are in S'pore on holiday. using your child's citizenship, it may be possible for you to get PR here. or if you can somehow find a S'porean girlfriend to marry, also can. maybe from online relationship through ICQ, SGforums etc. just some crappy suggestions. you can go find out more about the technical details.
