190 and 972 continue to have extremely high loading during peak hours. 700 has lost its loading completely. 960 still has decent loading during peak hours from city to BPJ and Mandai to Woodlands but opposite direction loading is miserably low.

Before downtown line, almost every 190/972 are packed. Wonder that guy who keep on complaining abt 190 still got complain or not.

I see that SMRT seems to be doing a better job than SBS despite their fleet having a significant proportion of low capaity bus.

That segnment is also served by 700 and 960, a total of 4 buses.

Thus, the combined frequency of buses by SMRT along that stretch is way much better than SBS, and they even have frequency of 4 to 7 minutes at night, compared to 8 to 16 minutes for 23.

I took 190 at Whitley and to Bukit Panjang around 6:30pm even before the Downtown Line operates. Buses are very frequenty, with 960, 700 and 190 coming together and I can even find a seat on the 190 that I board.

In contrast, whether I can board 23 at Jalan Kolam Ayer at 6:30pm every day evening peak, before PIE depends a lot on whether the bus captain want to stop and open the door as buses that reach that stop at that timing are mostly crowded with passengers already standing at front door.

Have anyone done a loading check for 23 from 6:00pm to 7:30 pm at Jalan Kolam Ayer (Infineon) on normal working weekdays? if yes, can share?

Maybe the opening of DTL3 (Geylang Bahru) may help to alleviate the loading.

Would there be any incentive for 5, 59, 506 to stop at either of the Jln Kolam Ayer stops, perhaps as a link to Toa Payoh and/or Bedok Reservoir? Or would it be unnecessary due to DTL3?

Actually SBST has slowed down upgrading/adding buses on services. Hardly any in the last quarter. Most services in my opinion are quite okay. The ones where I personally feel some upgrades (not fleet add) is required are:

Actually, I feel that most SBST bus services have just about the right capacity, so no need to enhance, unless got new residential development or something along the route.

So, actually, bus services like 5, 109, 111 and 181 do need fleet add.

Whereas for 30, the only new area I know is those at Taman Jurong, but then I think 49 has already provided provisions for that, so no need for any fleet-add.

Nonetheless, I agree that bus services like 43 and 103 may need fleet add in future.

But overall 190 and 972 had much higher loading than 23 (before DTL2) and that's one of the reasons why they have more robust frequencies. Another would be the complaints by netizens who waited for 14 buses before successfully boarding 190.

And 190 still had many rigids in its fleet even before DTL which kind of boosted its frequency...

Express bus service 502

Observed the loading on this bus service today from 5:39pm to 7:28pm, from Orchard Road to Pioneer Road North.

In the city, I only observed the number of people boarding the bus as I only wanted to find out roughly how many people take bus 502 back to Jurong.

The number of people boarding the bus is as follows,

Orchard Road: +39

Bras Basah Road: +15

Temasek Boulevard: +7

Temasek Avenue: +5

Bayfront Avenue: +2

Central Boulevard: +14

Shenton Way: +20

When the bus ran express from Shenton Way to Boon Lay Way, there were 80 people on the bus - 52 at upper deck, 28 at lower deck.

When the bus was in Jurong, the following loading was observed:

Boon Lay Way: +4 -4 (80 pax)

Toh Guan Road: +12 -24 (68 pax)

Jurong East Avenue 1: +8 -31 (45 pax)

Jurong West Avenue 1: +11 -20 (36 pax)

Boon Lay Avenue: +4 -11 (29 pax)

Jurong West Central 1: +0 -1 (28 pax)

Jurong West Street 64: +0 -9 (19 pax)

Jurong West Street 75: +1 -11 (9 pax)

Jurong West Avenue 5: +0 -7 (2 pax)

Pioneer Road North: +0 -2 (0 pax)

Soon Lee Road: No data (but very likely is +0 -0; 0 pax)

Interestingly, 79 pax alighted from Boon Lay Way to Jurong West Ave 1 while only 80 pax were onboard after Shenton Way. While there may still be some pax who boarded at IMM / Toh Guan and alighted at Jurong East/West Ave 1, to me it shows that 502 mainly caters to Jurong East (at best until Boon Lay Gardens) residents to CBD, not really Jurong West.

On the other hand 502 also works well as a townlink service between Jurong East and Jurong West...

observation on sv23 at PIE bus stop (after infineon) on 21/76pm to 650pm

6.07pm - unknown DD - around 15 standees when bus leave bus stop.

6.12pm - SG5303 (DD) - 6 pax board the bus, bus have empty seats (around 50 paxes on board)

6.23pm -SG5351 (DD) - 8pax board the bus, 4 pax cant board, bus full till door. (can see stil have some standing space at the rear)...

6.29pm - SBS3111 (DD) - 10pax board the bus. no one left behind. bus was also full till entrance door.

6.44pm -SBS3013 (DD) - 11 pax board the bus, around 15 standees on board. bus was not full to door, despite it is 15 mins behind the previous bus

6.49pm - DD (forget the rego) - around 4 pax board, bus have around 15 standees as well.

6 DDs in 42 mins and almost all are full (except for one trip)...

saw a few DDs off service along PIE toward bedok during this timing. (believe should be sv8/28/31 DDs going back to BNDEP). maybe SBST can deploy a few trips of downroute bus under 23A from the Jalan Kolam Ayer bus stops by using these off service buses from 630 pm to 8pm.. (maybe 3-4 trips will do).

23A can terminate at Tampines Ave 1 (before Ave 5)...and bus can off service back to BNDEP (just slightly longer distance than normal PIE route)..
