India, Singapore in arms deal
4 November 2003: India will sell $600 million worth of anti-tank
missiles, pilotless targeted aircraft and remote piloted vehicles
to Singapore and buy in return advanced GPS systems for $50
million.
The two-way deal was signed during Singapore defence minister Rear
Admiral Teo Chee Heans four-day visit to India in October, while
the only part that was made public were the agreements to hold an
annual defence-policy dialogue, joint air and army exercises,
expanded navy-to-navy cooperation, and training for the Singaporean
army.
It was the Singapore defence ministers first visit to India, and
signals Singapores moves to consolidate its military, since new
fissions are coming in ASEAN, even as the US is conceptualising an
Asian NATO, where key roles are envisaged for India and
Singapore.
