What's so hard about believing in the Big Bang?

dakkon_blackblade SG

I’ve just read “Big Bang” by Simon Singh last week. It’s very well-written, coherent and concise, and makes a good case for the Big Bang theory. But I suppose one reason why it’s so hard for people to believe in the Big Bang theory is that it’s counter-intuitive, just like how people of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries found it hard to accept the theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun and not the other way round.

Universe 'child of previous one'

A joint UK-US team has put forward an alternative theory of cosmic evolution.

It proposes that the Universe undergoes cycles of "Big Bangs" and "Big Crunches", meaning our Universe is merely a "child of the previous one".

It challenges the conventional view of the cosmos, which observations show to be 12-14 billion years old.

The new ideas, reported in the journal Science, may explain why the expansion of the Universe is accelerating, the researchers say.

"At present the conventional view is that all of space, time, matter and energy began at a single point, which then expanded and cooled, leaving the Universe as it is today," said Professor Paul Steinhardt of Princeton University, New Jersey.

"However, this new theory suggests that there's a continuous cycle of universes, with each a repeat of the last, but not an exact replica.

"It can be thought of as a child of the previous universe."

You see, in science; nothing is confirmed, not even "Gravity."

What was before the big bang? Okay so the universe was an ultra-dense little singularity, but when it was like that, what was around it? Space? If so where did that space come from? Confused

There is another theory, that our Universe isnt the only one, and that each Universe is like a small leaf existing on a big tree, and that each big bang is like the growing and dying of a leaf. This shows that Universes never cease to exist because leaves will keep on growing and dropping off the tree…any thoughts on this?

Our universe is the child of the previous one and there will be many after our too.

Did you read the article I linked? Not only "many after" but

Dark matter

"At present there may be an alternative 'dark matter' universe that exists at the same time as ours, but we could never reach it," explained Professor Turok.

"The best way to think of this is to think of a pane of double glazing with a fly on it. The fly is unable to cross over from one side to another, just like we are unable to get from one universe to another.

"These two universes are drawn together by the force of gravity and will eventually collide.

"This means that things that are happening now will help to create another universe in the future."

All these of course is just high level speculating.

Actually it depends on whom you ask.

There is something called quantum theory simaliar to the tree theory but not totally similar.

Whenever a quantum measurement is taken, the universe will split into many universe based on the factors and predicted calculations and from there, it will choose the most fine tuned one.

It must be stressed that quantum theory does exist anywhere. An example: I an going out to buy some soft drinks but I an wondering whether I should go... my local convenient store or 7 Eleven? Based on these two choices, I can only assume I will go to either one of them but I can predict the other.

It must be stressed that quantum theory does exist anywhere.

Like if 2 people were to travel towards each other half way between the distance that they were apart, stop and then do it again; they will never meet.

Lim Wei Ming SG

If quantum theory is accurate, that means there is virtually millons of our own universe, slightly different from each other, based on the decisions & actions that we make. From there, the universe will select the one that is most fine-tuned for our survival, because if its not fine-tuned, we will not survive to see it!

What do you guys think of the Steady State theory (that opposes the Big Bang)? Personally I think the BB theory makes more sense with regards to properties of physics...

casino_king SG

Actually quantum theory couldn't care less whether the universe exist or not, much less select the most fined tuned? If there are no observers, the the universe is not in existence. There is only a probability of the universe's existence but not the universe's existence? What's your take?

Lim Wei Ming SG

Our brain consists of atoms which all has quantum behaviour. That's the problem. Its not until the mind comes into play that the answer is given out. It is said that we still do not fully understand the relationship between the mind and the brain. Sciencetist John Wheeler has even concluded that it is in fact the mind that brought the universe into life.

i say many times already, we’re instances of objects in a lifeform simulation program as an experiment done by real people. it will end in 2 hours of their time!

I think it is just speculation to the extreme if the conclusion are based on Quantum Theory. Quantum Theory by itself is silent on the relationship between mind and "answer."
