sammizhu SG Do you think the Esplanade – Theatre on the Bay was designed by local architects or western ones? Do you think western architects are receiving more respects in Singapore?
praetor81 SG WELL I’D SAY THATS A MIGHTY BIG BUILDING SMACK IN SINGAPORE SO I’D SAY SINGAPORE WOULD LIKE TO POTRAY ITS ARTISTIC FEATURES THATS Y I SAY ITS LOCAL ARCHITECTS
sammizhu SG Well, FireIce gave the correct answer. Thanks! But why we need any foreign architects as consultant on these kind of cultural icon projects?
chenc SG Esplanade is not for Singapore to show its very own culture! Its for Singapore to show the world its moving towards a society which appreciate art and have this element in their everyday life. And once again, its not design to be a durian to show Singapore's unique culture! Its design to allow people from inside the building to have a maximum view of the outside environment. The chief designer said its designed to be the eyes of a dragonfly. How it was seen as durian by many is still a mystery to me
sammizhu SG I like your answer! So which buidling/architecture do you think is used to show its culture? Those temples and mosque called cultural heritage? Or the Merlion statue(it's not even a building)? Anything designed should be understood and accepted by public. What it looks like is not important. When everybody think they are two durians, they actually are.
GHoST_18 SG because our government believe in foreign talents... and our current skyline is actually "borrowed" modernity from the skylines of london, new york and japan... and one of the reasons is tat there are technical aspects to comply which those foreign architects are not familiar with... read up on william lim's > architecture, art and identity in singapore: is there life after tabula rasa... and u will understand more and why almost all our "landmark" buildings in singapore are designed by foreign architects...
sammizhu SG P.S. The phrase “cultural icon project” are not created by me. Government defined Esplanade as cultural icon before it was designed.
chenc SG Accept? But are you accepting it in the first place. Its not design with cultures of Singapore in it, yet you still wanted to believe other wise. Get a life man, i only commented Esplanade is not build to show Singapore's culture. And anyway, why do Singapore need 2 durian buildings for its logo? Because Singapore produce most durians in the world? Because Singapore has the best durians?
GHoST_18 SG in case u all dunno... our "durian" is very famous... it appeared in many archi magazines...
chenc SG Please go read the magazine carefully. Its appreciated not because of it look like durians, but because of the smart use or triangular angles and large window panels.
GHoST_18 SG laugh all you want... i might not know everything... but i think i have enough knowledge in this field... and if u dunno.. clever integration of techical components is part of architecture...
chenc SG Oh i see. So they draw the blueprint with the help of a durian? If not what has the durian got to do with this
sammizhu SG Take It Easy!!!!!!!! I'm not saying durian makes culture. It's just a shape. My purpose is to discuss the position of local architects. Too many foreign talents and also local competitors. And the government intend to employ more foreign architects companies. How the locals struggle to survive or even being famous?
M©+square SG I personally don't find Esplanade a impressive place. I despise the nature of that supposed 'internation hub'
GHoST_18 SG diff architects work differently... some work with metaphors... some work with site constraints... it depends... in this case... u would have to ask tat architect from michael wilford how he derive this form...
chenc SG Oh please! Read my post from above. If you watch the CNA Esplanade special from years back, its an open fact that Wilford mimic the eyes of a dragonfly when he design the building, and was shocked when people say ' Look at that 2 durians!'
GHoST_18 SG just like how singapore government favours foreign talents.. overseas government favours foreign talents... 1 reason is also because their country lack talents in this field... and for local firms to survive... either they do overseas projects or they collaborate with foreign firms to do local projects..
