this is the 2005 nominal ranking.... PRC is ranked 110th, US $1,703....

the one u gave is PPP ranking.... singapore is lower cos our cost of living is higher, our money can buy less in singapore, hence a lower purchasing power... think before u post....

"Comparisons of national wealth are also frequently made on the basis of nominal GDP, which does not reflect differences in the cost of living in different countries. The advantages of using nominal GDP figures include that less estimation is required, and that they more accurately reflect the participation of the inhabitants of a country in the global economy. On the whole PPP per capita figures are more narrowly spread than GDP per capita figures.

Great care should be taken when using either set of figures to compare the wealth of two countries. Often people who wish to promote or denigrate a country will use the figure that suits their case best and ignore the other one, which may be substantially different, but a valid comparison of two economies should take both rankings into account, as well as utilising other economic data to put an economy in context."

In economics, purchasing power parity (PPP) is an estimate of the exchange rate required to equalize the purchasing power of different currencies, given the prices of goods and services in the countries concerned. PPP exchange rates are used for a number of purposes, most notably to compare the standard of living of two or more countries. It is necessary because comparing the gross domestic products (GDP) using market exchange rates does not accurately measure differences in income and consumption. Market exchange rates fluctuate widely, and the purchasing power parity hypothesis suggests that the long run equilibrium value is that which yields purchasing power parity.

Comparing GDPs of different countries is done by using the method of converting national GDPs into dollars using purchasing-power parities (PPPs) instead of market exchange rates. The latter can distort the relative size of economies, not only because currencies fluctuate, but also because prices of non-traded goods and services are lower in poorer economies. For example, a US dollar of spending in China is worth a lot more than it is in the United States.

Estimation of purchasing parity is complicated by the fact that countries do not simply differ in a uniform price level; rather, the difference in food prices may be greater than the difference in housing prices or in the opposite direction of the difference in entertainment prices. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the cost of baskets of goods and services using a price index. This is a difficult task, since purchasing patterns and even the goods available to purchase differ across countries. It is necessary to make complex adjustments for differences in the quality of goods and services, a task undertaken by the International Comparisons Project. Additional statistical difficulties arise with multilateral comparisons when (as is usually the case) more than two countries are to be compared.

The differences between PPP and real exchange rates can be significant. For example, GDP per capita in China is about USD 1,500, while on a PPP basis, it is about USD 6,200. At the other extreme, Japan's nominal GDP per capita is around USD 37,600, but its PPP figure is only USD 31,400.

Where PPP comparisons are made over some interval of time proper account needs to be made of inflationary effects.
