Remember the proton packs the Ghostbusters rocked?
Turned out they're not all that impossible. There is a method to
the madness, a perceived science and of course, gadgets that modern
ghosthunters use to track the paranormal.
We’re not talking religious artefacts but devices you
can purchase off the internet. They’re nothing like what
you’ve ever seen before, ranging from instruments that measure
sudden changes in temperatures, to tools that detect
electromagnetic field frequencies. Contrary to what popular culture
might lead you to believe, ghosts don’t appear as full bloodied
figures, but manifest as orbs and energy. Well, at least according
to ghost hunters. We spoke to Desmond Wong of the Singapore
Paranormal Investigators to understand what they do and how they do
it.
*The Singapore Paranormal Investigators are an
organisation that studies paranormal phenomena using scientific
means. They investigate rumoured haunted places and even respond to
complaints about private hauntings. Yes, that means if you think
you have a paranormal problem, you can hit them up.

Behind the haunting must be a reason, and the SPI tries
to find that out by looking into the history of a particular place.
What are the sightings reported? Did any deaths occur at the place
in the past?
If there have been sightings, the organisation tries to
interview the witness to find out more. Or if a death had occurred
previously, it’s common that the paranormal phenomenon will happen
around the same time which brings us to Step 2 of the
process. We hear 3 to 4am is the witching hour when most
paranormal activity happens.
"SPI has carried out a few investigations at Bukit
Batok Park, where a female jogger died from an attack.
During the first investigation, we recorded electro
voice phenomenon (EVP) at the spot where the victim was attacked
after midnight. We heard unexplained music and recorded a man's
voice.
We went back some years later to investigate again. We
had a volunteer that we briefed before setting up the gadgets -
like an EMF mter, night vision camera, motion sensors, and an EVP
recorder - around her before retreating to watch over her at a
distance. Suddenly, the gadgets powered down on their own and
almost all the batteries had to be replaced, even though we had
fully charged them beforehand.
The volunteer then told us via the walkie talkie that
she heard something. After which the motion sensor alarm sounded so
two of our members ran over to where she was. One of them shouted
while the other took off after something! When we asked them
afterwards, they said they both saw a white figure pass by swiftly.
When we studied the video footage from the incident, it actually
captured the same white figure passing behind the volunteer, while
the EVP recording captured a low male voice sighing."
