nice... we probably can use that to shoot down malaysia's A2... Mr. Green

foga SG

A2? no lah, maybe SU-30,migs,hornets.....

wonder which vehicle SAF would chose to mount those missiles on.
bionix? terrex?

this bring me to another thing, i ever did saw a M113 mounted with a twin igla launcher plus it's radar. the radar sure looks like a oil drum to me.

tripwire SG

and why not A2… afterall.. in the air… its like any other plane with wing and engine….made of metal also… you think the missile is gonna care if its target is a plane or a stupid straight flying rocket?

Flight Cadet Officer SG

somebody please write a feedback to CDF to decommission the god damn i-Hawks .

Viper52 SG

While the purchase of the Crotale is a good move I do believe that, with the increasing appearance of longer ranged precision guided weapons amongst regional air forces, it is time for the SAF to consider purchasing longer ranged Air Defence systems to counter this threat. Systems like the S-300 must defintitely come into consideration to meet this coming threat.

Any thoughts?

foxtrout8 SG

Oh yes , i believe the S-300 ( or 400 ) will indeed be a force multiplier , a stationary resistor agaisnt those MRCA from south and north. But even if we dun purchase the S-300 , i believe our neighbours will , to stop our overwheming airpower .......

tripwire SG

tie 50kg of HE to that S 300... and we got ourselves an SRBM Mr. Green

wat about THAAD? project cancelled?

branzzz SG

i've noticed countries like japan, korea and i believe taiwan all have the patriot missle system. i was wondering if sg would get those. unrealistic as i may i sound, i think the sm3er would be great for the saf... Smile

warspite SG

Sorry to pour cold water on your eagerness, but SM3ER is sea-based, not land-based. Its too damned big for use on land I think. Otherwise, the USAF and army would have clammer for that system ages ago, if my memory serves me right. Anybody has any info????

bcoy SG

Is this a replacement of a current system or an additional platform to complement existing systems?

NathanG5 SG

out of topic guys...something i always wana say..its in my chest always nid to get it out of me..
the present CDF look like wuss piggy to me... Very Happy
ahhhhh..feel much better..i prefer Uncle Poh..very nice guy

This is truely something I cannot understand. Why would US Congress be notified of a French missile sales to Singapore. It is not part of the Foreign Military Sales law requiring the congress to approval sales of military equipment and services. Unless part of the deal has some US components, or has Thales Air Defense been partly own by some American company?

Secondly question is that is this the Rapier replacement? Which platform/chassis is the launcher being mounted on?

Viper52 SG

Joe B, check out http://www.janes.com/defence/land_forces/news/jdw/jdw010307_4_n.shtml

You answer is in the phrase "The original VT1 was designed and built under contract to Thomson-CSF Airsys (now Thales Air Defence) by the now Lockheed Martin. Development of the VT1 commenced in the USA in 1986" in the 3rd paragraph

I've no idea if this is the Rapier replacement, but I'd bet it will be mounted on a Bionix chassis

kanzer SG

Could it be used on the Thales Crotale Naval CN2 on the delta frigates? this system also uses the VT-1...... Question

IAF SG

i think he looks like the kim jong il's first cousin. Btw, i think kim jong il is the real FAT BASTARD

buzz SG

A good buy versus this ridiculously expensive NGF tender.

It's the right system when you look at the most immediate threat Singapore is facing - terrorism especially those from the air.

I don't think the VT-1 is a replacement for the rapier. I believe it will be a mobile system versus the rapier - a more static system for defense of installations.

VT-1 has a bigger warhead that's both contact and proximity fused. So if they hit anything there will be less pieces of it around to cause any collateral damage.

Any idea if the FCS is CROTALE or local developed system?

I wonder Is it possible to hang glide from JB to Singapore CBD or Orchard rd area if they jump off one of those high rises?

Are they detectable by radar? I think we need a IR area sensor to cope with this possibility.

the Bear SG

you saw the iglas on the M113s too?

I thought the M113s would be too top-heavy and high centre of gravity to be very stable.

kinda worried for our guys in the vehicle if it overturns...

On the way SG

Hi Foga and moderator,
Once again, I wrestle with whether this is a "state secret" or not, but I hate to burst your bubble. The VT-1 missles have been ordered for the La Fayette class stealth frigates that the RSN are buying. Each frigate has a Crotale CN2 SAM system that uses these VT-1 missiles. Each ship normally carries 24 missiles. The existing SAF SAM umbrella is pretty good and interlocking. Although we do not have the Bloodhounds anymore, we use I-Hawks for long to medium range, than Rapier for area defence, than Igilas, RBS-70s, and various AA guns for short range.Cheers
